Bolton Wanderers pulled off a stunning 4-3 victory over Norwich City in a seven-goal thriller at Carrow Road on September 20, 2026. The Championship encounter swung one way and then the other, with Bolton scoring a late winner to claim all three points and dent Norwich's promotion aspirations.

Match Overview

Norwich City, one of the favourites for promotion, welcomed Bolton Wanderers to Carrow Road expecting to extend their unbeaten home run. Bolton, seen as outsiders for a play-off spot, arrived with a fearless attitude. The match exceeded all expectations, producing end-to-end action and a result that few would have predicted.

Key Moments

Bolton stunned the home crowd by taking the lead in the 9th minute. Striker James Wilson, a constant menace, latched onto a through ball and calmly finished past the Norwich goalkeeper. Norwich responded well and equalised in the 22nd minute through a header from defender Ben Gibson, but Bolton regained the lead just five minutes later when midfielder Josh Sheehan curled a superb effort into the top corner.

Bolton went 3-1 up in the 38th minute, Wilson grabbing his second with a clinical finish on the counter. Norwich, shell-shocked, needed a response before half-time, and they got one in first-half stoppage time when playmaker Gabriel Sara converted a penalty after a foul on his teammate.

The second half was a different story. Norwich dominated possession and drew level in the 67th minute through a stunning strike from substitute Josh Sargent. The crowd was in full voice, and it seemed only a matter of time before Norwich would find a winner. But Bolton had other ideas. With just five minutes remaining, Bolton won a corner. The ball was whipped in, and centre-back Ricardo Santos rose unmarked to head home the winner, sending the travelling fans into delirium.

Tactical Story

Norwich City started in a 4-2-3-1, looking to control the game through their midfield. However, Bolton's aggressive 3-5-2 formation caused them problems all evening. Bolton's wing-backs pushed high, and their front two of Wilson and Dion Charles constantly exploited the space behind Norwich's full-backs. Norwich's manager made changes at half-time, switching to a back three to counter Bolton's threat, which helped them get back into the game. But Bolton's resilience and set-piece threat ultimately paid off. The late winner came from a set-piece, a recurring weakness for Norwich this season.

Standout Players

• James Wilson (Bolton Wanderers): The striker was unplayable at times, scoring two goals and causing havoc with his movement.
• Ricardo Santos (Bolton Wanderers): The captain scored the winning goal and was a rock at the back, making several crucial clearances.
• Gabriel Sara (Norwich City): The Brazilian was Norwich's best player, scoring a penalty and creating numerous chances.

Table and Season Impact

This result blows the Championship promotion race wide open. Bolton Wanderers move up to fifth, level on points with the play-off places, and their belief will be sky-high after this performance. Norwich City, who would have gone top with a win, drop to fourth and have now lost two of their last three home games. The Canaries must address their defensive frailties quickly if they are to maintain their promotion challenge. Bolton, on the other hand, have sent a statement to the rest of the division.
