AFC Totton delivered a confident away performance to beat Hemel Hempstead Town 3-1 in the English Conference South Division on Saturday, 24 October 2026, climbing further into the playoff conversation with a disciplined display at Vauxhall Road.

Totton were sharper in both boxes and punished Hemel Hempstead Town with a clinical second-half spell. The visitors pressed well, defended their lead with maturity and secured the points with a late third goal.

Match overview

AFC Totton started positively and took the lead in the 23rd minute when Jack Matthews found space inside the penalty area and finished with composure. Hemel Hempstead Town responded with a spell of possession but struggled to create clear chances against Totton’s well-organised back line.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 54th minute, again through Matthews, whose movement in the box proved difficult to handle. Hemel reduced the deficit with 19 minutes remaining through Ryan Blake, but Totton remained calm and sealed the win in the 86th minute.

Key moments

• 23rd minute – AFC Totton 1-0: Jack Matthews opened the scoring with a low finish after a quick move down the right.
• 54th minute – AFC Totton 2-0: Matthews scored his second, reacting first to a loose ball in the box.
• 71st minute – Hemel Hempstead Town 1-2: Ryan Blake headed home from a cross to give the hosts hope.
• 86th minute – AFC Totton 3-1: Callum Rowe finished a counter-attack to secure the three points.

Tactical story

Totton’s pressing structure caused Hemel Hempstead Town problems throughout. The visitors denied easy access into midfield and forced the hosts into long balls, which were comfortably dealt with by Totton’s centre-backs. In possession, Totton were direct and purposeful, often looking to release their wide players into space.

Hemel had more of the ball after half-time but lacked penetration until Blake’s header. By then, Totton had already established a cushion and were able to sit deeper, absorb pressure and strike on the counter. The third goal was a perfect example of that game management.

Standout players

Jack Matthews was the outstanding player on the pitch, scoring twice and leading the line with intelligence. His movement created space for others, and his finishing was ruthless. Callum Rowe also made a major impact, capped by the late goal that ended Hemel’s resistance.

For Hemel Hempstead Town, Ryan Blake was the brightest spark and took his goal well. The hosts’ goalkeeper made several saves to keep the score down, but Hemel’s defenders will be disappointed with the space they allowed in key moments.

Table and season impact

The result strengthens AFC Totton’s position in the Conference South standings and gives them valuable momentum in the race for the playoffs. Away wins of this quality are a clear statement of intent. Hemel Hempstead Town, meanwhile, remain inconsistent and will need to improve their defensive organisation if they are to climb the table.
