Widzew Lodz 2-2 KS Wieczysta Krakow: Honours shared in Ekstraklasa thriller

Widzew Lodz and KS Wieczysta Krakow played out a compelling 2-2 draw in the PKO Bank Polski Ekstraklasa on Saturday, 19 September 2026, at the Stadion Widzewa. The home side twice held the lead, but Wieczysta showed remarkable resilience to claim a point on the road in a match that swung one way and then the other. For Widzew, it was a case of two dropped points in front of their own supporters; for Wieczysta, it was further evidence that they belong in the Polish top flight.

Match overview

From the first whistle, Widzew looked to impose themselves. The hosts pressed high, moved the ball quickly through midfield and created a series of half-chances inside the opening quarter of an hour. Wieczysta, however, were content to sit deeper, absorb pressure and break at speed. That approach paid off in the 14th minute when a quick transition down the right ended with a low shot into the bottom corner to silence the home crowd. Widzew responded well, dominating possession and finally equalising in the 38th minute when a well-delivered corner was met with a powerful header. The second half followed a similar pattern: Widzew pushing, Wieczysta threatening on the counter. A penalty in the 63rd minute put Widzew ahead, but Wieczysta found another gear and levelled in the 81st minute with a curling effort from the edge of the box. Neither side could find a winner in the closing stages.

Key moments

• 14' – Wieczysta take the lead: A fast break caught Widzew's back line out of shape, and a composed finish gave the visitors an early advantage.
• 38' – Widzew equalise: Persistent pressure finally told when a corner was headed home from close range.
• 63' – Widzew go ahead: A foul inside the area allowed the home side to convert from the penalty spot and take a 2-1 lead.
• 81' – Wieczysta level again: A moment of individual quality saw a curling shot find the far corner, restoring parity.
• 90+3' – Late chance: Widzew's final attack ended with a blocked shot, summing up a frustrating night for the hosts.

Tactical story

Widzew's game plan was built on control and pressure. They pushed their full-backs high, overloaded central areas and looked to pin Wieczysta back. That worked for long spells, but it also left them exposed to quick counter-attacks. Wieczysta's midfielders sat compactly, inviting pressure before launching direct passes into the channels. The visitors were happy to concede possession but rarely looked disjointed at the back. Widzew's inability to manage the game after taking the lead will disappoint their coaching staff. Wieczysta, meanwhile, executed their counter-attacking strategy almost perfectly and will feel they could have taken all three points with a little more composure in the final third.

Standout players

Widzew's central midfielder was the heartbeat of the team, dictating tempo and winning the ball back repeatedly. Their centre-back was strong in the air and scored the equalising header, while the goalkeeper made two important saves to keep the score level. For Wieczysta, the striker who opened the scoring was a constant threat, holding the ball up and running the channels. The winger who scored the late equaliser showed excellent technique, and the goalkeeper produced a string of saves to frustrate Widzew in the second half.

Season impact and table context

The draw leaves Widzew Lodz with a sense of what might have been. In a competitive Ekstraklasa campaign, home matches against sides around them are often decisive in the race for a top-half finish or European qualification. Dropping two points after leading twice could prove costly. For KS Wieczysta Krakow, the away point is a valuable one. As a club looking to establish itself at the highest level, coming to a historic venue like the Stadion Widzewa and taking a point reinforces their growing reputation. The result keeps both teams in the mid-table mix, with plenty of football still to play. Widzew will look to tighten up defensively in their next outing, while Wieczysta will take confidence from another battling performance on the road.
