Salford City 2-1 Crawley Town: Late Stockton Strike Seals Hard-Fought League Two Win

Salford City claimed a valuable 2-1 victory over Crawley Town in EFL League Two on Saturday evening, with a late goal from Cole Stockton deciding a match that swung one way and then the other at the Peninsula Stadium. Callum Hendry had given Salford an early lead, Crawley responded through Ade Adeyemo, and Stockton’s composed finish in the closing stages ensured the home side took all three points from a competitive League Two result.

Match overview

Salford started with intent, pressing Crawley high and forcing the visitors into several rushed clearances. The home side’s energy was rewarded midway through the first half when Hendry latched onto a loose ball inside the penalty area and finished low beyond the goalkeeper. Crawley, however, grew into the contest and began to find space behind Salford’s advanced full-backs.

The visitors equalised after the break with a classic counter-attacking goal. Adeyemo raced into the channel, cut inside, and placed a measured effort past the Salford keeper to silence the home crowd. The momentum briefly belonged to Crawley, but Salford’s substitutes changed the rhythm of the game, and Stockton’s late winner sent the Peninsula Stadium into celebration.

Key moments

• 23rd minute – Salford take the lead: Callum Hendry pounced on a defensive turnover and drilled a low finish into the bottom corner.
• 58th minute – Crawley equalise: Ade Adeyemo broke at speed and curled a composed effort beyond the goalkeeper after a quick transition.
• 82nd minute – Salford win it: Cole Stockton met a delivery into the box and guided a header beyond the Crawley keeper to make it 2-1.

Tactical story

Salford’s high press was the defining feature of the first half. By squeezing Crawley’s midfield and forcing the visitors to play long, the home side created repeated second-ball opportunities and were able to sustain attacks. Crawley’s response was to sit deeper and use the pace of Adeyemo on the break, which worked perfectly for their equaliser.

The game’s decisive tactical shift came from the Salford bench. Stockton’s introduction gave the hosts a more direct focal point, and Salford began to put crosses into the box with greater purpose. Crawley defended bravely, but the pressure told in the final ten minutes as the home side found one more attacking moment.

Standout players

Stockton was the match-winner, and his impact went beyond the goal. He held the ball up, occupied both centre-backs, and gave Salford a platform to sustain late pressure. Hendry’s first-half opener was also crucial, while Salford’s midfield worked tirelessly to win second balls. For Crawley, Adeyemo was the brightest attacking threat and took his equaliser with real quality.

Table and season impact

The win gives Salford another important boost in the League Two promotion race, strengthening their position in and around the play-off places. Crawley, meanwhile, will rue a strong second-half spell that yielded only a single goal. In a division where margins are tight, Stockton’s late finish could prove to be a significant moment in Salford’s season.
