Cheltenham Town suffered a disappointing home defeat on Saturday, going down 0-2 to Salford City in EFL League Two at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium. Salford’s clinical finishing and defensive discipline proved the difference in a match that Cheltenham will want to forget quickly.

Match overview

Salford City arrived with a clear game plan and executed it to perfection, scoring in each half to secure a comfortable away win. Cheltenham struggled to create clear chances and were punished for defensive lapses. The visitors’ organised approach frustrated the home side, who rarely tested the goalkeeper despite enjoying periods of possession.

Key moments

• 23rd minute: Salford took the lead through a well-worked move, finished off with a low drive into the bottom corner.
• 41st minute: Cheltenham’s best chance of the half fell to their striker, but his header was saved.
• 67th minute: Salford doubled their lead from a corner, a powerful header giving the goalkeeper no chance.
• 82nd minute: Cheltenham pushed forward but couldn’t find a consolation goal.

Tactical story

Salford’s compact 4-4-2 frustrated Cheltenham, who struggled to break down a disciplined defence. The visitors’ midfield duo dominated the centre of the park, winning second balls and launching quick counter-attacks. Cheltenham’s full-backs were often caught out of position, leaving space for Salford to exploit. The home side’s lack of width and creativity in the final third was a recurring problem.

Standout players

Salford’s striker was a constant threat, scoring one and assisting the other. Their centre-back was imperious in the air, while the goalkeeper made a crucial save at 1-0. For Cheltenham, the goalkeeper prevented a heavier defeat, but the attacking players were largely anonymous. The midfield battle was lost early, and that set the tone.

League Two table impact

Salford City climb into the promotion mix with this win, while Cheltenham Town remain perilously close to the relegation zone. The Robins will need to improve quickly to avoid a season-long struggle. The result adds pressure on the manager and highlights the gap in quality between the two sides on the day.

Salford will be delighted with the three points, while Cheltenham must regroup ahead of their next match.
