Dep. Santo Domingo 0-0 22 de Julio: Serie B promotion hopefuls cancel each other out

Dep. Santo Domingo and 22 de Julio played out a goalless draw in the Ecuadorian Campeonato Serie B on 29 October 2026, a result that underlined the defensive discipline of both sides but left each team frustrated in the race for promotion. At the Estadio Olímpico de Santo Domingo, clear chances were limited, yet the match was far from dull, with both goalkeepers called into action and a first-half goal ruled out for offside.

Match overview

Dep. Santo Domingo began with the greater urgency, pushing their full-backs high and looking to create overloads on the flanks. 22 de Julio responded by sitting compact in a disciplined mid-block, inviting pressure before looking to spring forward on the counter-attack. The visitors’ approach frustrated the hosts for long spells, but it also meant the game became a battle of patience rather than a free-flowing spectacle.

Both sides entered the fixture knowing that three points could strengthen their position in the Serie B standings. Instead, they had to settle for a share of the spoils after a contest decided by fine margins, last-ditch defending and two goalkeepers in commanding form.

Key moments

• 12th minute: Dep. Santo Domingo’s right winger cut inside and forced a low save at the near post, setting the tone for a busy evening for the 22 de Julio goalkeeper.
• 28th minute: 22 de Julio won a free-kick in a dangerous area, but the resulting header drifted just wide of the far post.
• 41st minute: The hosts thought they had taken the lead after a scramble in the box, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
• 58th minute: A sharp save from the Dep. Santo Domingo goalkeeper kept the score level after a quick 22 de Julio counter-attack.
• 74th minute: Dep. Santo Domingo’s captain met a corner with a powerful header, only for a defender to clear it off the line.
• 88th minute: 22 de Julio broke forward in numbers, but the final shot was lifted over the crossbar from the edge of the area.

Tactical story

Dep. Santo Domingo’s 4-2-3-1 shape gave them control of the ball, but they struggled to turn possession into clear-cut chances against a well-organised 4-4-2. The hosts’ best moments came through wide combinations and set pieces, while their midfield duo worked hard to suppress 22 de Julio’s transitions. The visitors, for their part, defended narrow and forced Dep. Santo Domingo into crosses that were often well handled by the centre-backs.

The match became a textbook example of two teams cancelling each other out: one seeking rhythm through patient build-up, the other content to defend deep and strike on the break. Neither side managed to sustain pressure long enough to claim a decisive advantage.

Standout performers

The Dep. Santo Domingo goalkeeper produced two important saves, including the stop early in the second half that prevented 22 de Julio from taking the lead against the run of play. The home captain was also influential, organising the back line and coming close with that second-half header. For 22 de Julio, the central defender was the outstanding figure, reading danger well and clearing several dangerous deliveries.

What the point means

A single point keeps both teams within touching distance of the Serie B promotion conversation, but it also leaves them with work to do. Dep. Santo Domingo will feel they did enough to win; 22 de Julio will point to their defensive resilience and the late counter-attack that almost stole all three points. The draw adds another layer of tension to the division’s promotion race, where consistency over the coming weeks will matter as much as individual performances.
