Dep. Santo Domingo 1-0 CD El Nacional — A second-half strike from Jhon Cifuentes gave Dep. Santo Domingo a hard-fought 1-0 victory over CD El Nacional in the Ecuadorian Campeonato Serie B on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the Estadio Olímpico de Santo Domingo. The win lifts the home side into the thick of the promotion race, while El Nacional’s hopes of closing the gap at the top suffered a frustrating setback.

Match Overview

Played under humid coastal conditions, the contest pitted Santo Domingo’s disciplined, counter-attacking style against El Nacional’s patient possession game. The visitors, one of the most storied clubs in Ecuadorian football, dominated the ball for long spells but struggled to break down a compact defensive block. Santo Domingo sat deep, absorbed pressure, and looked to spring forward through quick transitions. The decisive moment arrived in the 67th minute when Cifuentes latched onto a through ball, rounded the goalkeeper, and slotted into an empty net. El Nacional pushed bodies forward late, but a combination of wastefulness and resilient defending kept them scoreless.

Key Moments

• 12th minute: El Nacional’s first clear chance — a header from a corner flashes just wide of the far post.
• 34th minute: Santo Domingo goalkeeper Mateo Quiñónez makes a sharp low save to deny a curling effort from the edge of the box.
• 51st minute: El Nacional hit the crossbar with a dipping free-kick, the closest either side came before the goal.
• 67th minute: GOAL — Dep. Santo Domingo. Jhon Cifuentes races onto a defense-splitting pass, calmly rounds the keeper, and finishes into the unguarded net.
• 78th minute: El Nacional are reduced to ten men after a second yellow card for a late challenge in midfield.
• 90+3 minutes: A last-ditch block from Santo Domingo’s center-back denies a goal-bound shot, sealing the three points.

Tactical Story

Santo Domingo lined up in a 4-2-3-1 that morphed into a 4-4-2 without the ball. The midfield two screened the back line effectively, forcing El Nacional’s creative players into wide areas where crosses were easily cleared. The home side’s willingness to concede possession was calculated: they averaged just 38% of the ball but registered more shots on target than their opponents. El Nacional, by contrast, used a 4-3-3 with high full-backs, but their build-up became predictable. Once Santo Domingo scored, the visitors’ shape became stretched, and the late red card ended any realistic hope of a comeback.

Standout Players

Jhon Cifuentes (Dep. Santo Domingo) was the obvious hero, not only for the goal but for his relentless pressing and intelligent movement in behind. Mateo Quiñónez in goal produced two crucial saves, while center-back Luis Arboleda marshaled the defense with authority. For El Nacional, Andrés Mera was a constant threat from midfield, but his teammates lacked the final touch. Substitute Kevin Rodríguez added urgency after coming on, though his night ended with a booking rather than a goal.

What the Result Means

The three points move Dep. Santo Domingo into a promotion-playoff position in the Serie B table, extending their unbeaten run at home to five matches. For CD El Nacional, the defeat leaves them playing catch-up in the race for automatic promotion. With the season entering its decisive phase, El Nacional must quickly rediscover their scoring touch, while Santo Domingo will be buoyed by a victory that proves they can compete with the division’s biggest names.
