AB Akademisk 3-1 Sonderjyske — AB Akademisk produced one of the standout results of the Danish Cup on 17 September 2026, coming from behind to beat Superliga side Sønderjyske 3-1 at home. It was a classic cup upset, built on energy, organisation, and clinical finishing.

Sønderjyske took an early lead and looked in control for spells, but AB Akademisk responded with three unanswered goals to turn the tie on its head. The home side's high press and set-piece threat caused problems all evening, and the final score was no more than their ambition deserved.

Match Overview

Sønderjyske started the brighter of the two sides and took the lead on 12 minutes. A quick move down the left ended with Peter Christiansen sweeping the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. The Superliga outfit looked comfortable in possession and seemed likely to impose their quality on the game.

AB Akademisk had other ideas. They equalised on 29 minutes when Mikkel Jensen capitalised on a loose pass and finished coolly past the goalkeeper. The goal transformed the atmosphere and gave the underdogs belief. AB took the lead on 54 minutes, Jensen again on hand to convert a low cross from the right.

The third goal arrived on 78 minutes. Rasmus Nielsen rose highest from a corner and headed powerfully into the net, sending the home supporters into raptures. Sønderjyske pushed forward late in search of a lifeline, but AB's defence held firm. The final whistle confirmed a memorable 3-1 victory.

Tactical Story

AB Akademisk lined up with a disciplined 4-2-3-1, pressing aggressively in midfield and looking to turn possession over quickly. Their front four worked tirelessly to close down Sønderjyske's defenders, forcing long balls that AB's centre-backs dealt with comfortably. Set pieces were also a clear weapon, as shown by Nielsen's headed goal.

Sønderjyske rotated their squad and struggled to match AB's intensity. Their midfield was often bypassed, and the early lead may have bred a sense of comfort that allowed the hosts back into the match. Once AB equalised, the Superliga side never regained control, and the closing stages were marked by frustration and hurried attacks.

Standout Players

Mikkel Jensen was the hero with two goals, his movement and finishing proving too sharp for Sønderjyske's defence. Rasmus Nielsen was dominant in both boxes, capping his performance with the decisive third goal. AB goalkeeper Lars Sørensen made several important saves, while Peter Christiansen was Sønderjyske's most dangerous player despite the defeat.

What It Means

For AB Akademisk, this is a result that will be remembered for years. They advance to the next round of the Danish Cup with belief and momentum, and the victory underlines the magic of knockout football. Sønderjyske exit earlier than expected, and will now turn their full attention back to league matters.

The final score of 3-1 tells the story of a team that refused to be intimidated. AB Akademisk delivered a performance full of heart, tactical discipline, and no little quality.
