FC Hradec Králové survived a genuine scare before edging past a spirited Fotbal Příbram 2-1 in the Czech Cup, with the second-tier hosts pushing the top-flight visitors all the way to the final whistle.

On a mild midweek evening at a packed Příbram ground, the tie produced exactly the kind of cup drama the competition is famous for: a lower-division side playing without fear, a higher-ranked opponent struggling to impose itself, and a one-goal margin that kept the result in doubt until the very end.

Match overview

Hradec Králové began the stronger of the two teams, dominating possession and probing patiently for an opening. Their reward came with the opening goal, a well-constructed move that cut through Příbram's midfield line and left the goalkeeper with little chance.

Rather than folding, Příbram responded impressively. They pressed higher, won more duels in the middle third and pulled a goal back to set up a tense finish. From that point on, the game became a genuine contest, with the hosts throwing bodies forward in search of an equaliser and Hradec forced to defend with real discipline.

Key moments

• 22' — Hradec Králové take the lead after a slick passing sequence ends with a first-time finish inside the area.
• 35' — Příbram's goalkeeper makes a crucial save to keep the deficit at one going into the break.
• 58' — Hradec double their advantage, punishing a defensive lapse with a composed finish on the counter.
• 71' — Příbram pull one back and the crowd erupts, setting up a frantic closing period.
• 88' — A last-ditch block from a Hradec defender denies Příbram a late equaliser.

Tactical story

Příbram set up to frustrate, sitting in a narrow midfield block and looking to release their wide players on the break. It worked for long periods, particularly after the interval, when they pushed their full-backs higher and began to win the territorial battle.

Hradec Králové's quality in transition proved decisive. Their second goal came directly from a turnover, with three or four passes taking them from their own half to the opposition penalty box in seconds. That ruthlessness on the counter is precisely why the higher-ranked side advanced.

Standout performers

Hradec's attacking midfielder was the most influential player on the pitch, linking play between the lines and providing the assist for the opener. For Příbram, the goalkeeper and the captain in central midfield both produced performances that underlined why the club believes it can compete at a higher level.

What it means

Hradec Králové progress, but they will know this was far from a comfortable night. Cup competitions punish complacency, and the coaching staff will take plenty from a match that tested their side's resilience as much as its quality.

For Fotbal Příbram, the defeat is a painful one given how close they came, yet the performance will boost confidence for the league campaign ahead. They matched a top-flight opponent for long spells and, on another night, might have forced extra time.
