Sesvete U19 and Rijeka U19 shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw in the Croatian U19 League, an entertaining contest in which both sides led at different points before settling for a point apiece.

An even contest from the first whistle

The two academy sides traded possession in the opening exchanges, with Sesvete looking to build patiently from the back and Rijeka pressing high to disrupt that rhythm. It made for a lively, transitional game, and neither goalkeeper had a quiet opening twenty minutes.

Sesvete struck first, capitalising on a loose pass in midfield and moving the ball quickly into the penalty area for a tidy finish. The lead lasted only a short while, though, as Rijeka responded with a goal of their own, a well-worked move down the left that ended with a first-time strike.

Second half swings

Rijeka came out for the second half with greater intensity and took the lead for the first time, punishing Sesvete for switching off at a throw-in. The visitors' bench reacted immediately, and the tempo of the match rose again.

Sesvete's response was impressive. They pushed their wide players further forward and began delivering early crosses into the box, a tactic that eventually produced the equaliser. The final twenty minutes were end-to-end, with both teams creating chances to win it.

Key moments

• Sesvete opener: A turnover in midfield led to a quick, decisive finish.
• Rijeka equaliser: A sweeping move down the left finished with a strike from inside the area.
• Rijeka lead: Sesvete were caught napping from a restart and conceded within moments.
• Sesvete equaliser: Sustained wing pressure produced a cross that was converted at the back post.

Tactical story: two different ideas of control

Sesvete's game was based on possession and patient circulation, using their midfield trio to create numerical advantages in central areas. That worked well in the first half but left them exposed to Rijeka's quick counters after the interval, particularly when their full-backs advanced.

Rijeka were at their best in transition — winning the ball and attacking immediately — and their two goals came from exactly that pattern. Their challenge was sustaining pressure once Sesvete slowed the game down, and the inability to hold the lead will frustrate the coaching staff.

Standout performers

For Sesvete, the most influential players were the midfield playmaker who set the tempo and the winger who delivered the decisive cross for the equaliser. Rijeka's standout was their attacking midfielder, whose running beyond the striker repeatedly stretched Sesvete's defensive line and created the space for both goals.

What the draw means

In the context of the Croatian U19 League, a 2-2 draw reflects two competitive academy sides at a similar stage of development. Sesvete showed character to come from behind, while Rijeka demonstrated the quality of their transition play. Both will view the dropped points as an opportunity missed, but the performance levels suggest this will not be the last close encounter between the clubs this season.
