Atlético Melilla 0-3 Pinatar CF — Pinatar CF produced one of the most convincing away performances of the Copa del Rey first round, dismantling Atlético Melilla 3-0 to book a place in the next stage of the competition.

Match overview

Copa del Rey nights are traditionally about the underdog, the packed local ground and the sense that anything can happen. On this occasion, however, the script belonged entirely to the visitors. Pinatar CF travelled to Melilla with a clear plan: press high, move the ball quickly and deny the hosts any rhythm in midfield. Within the opening exchanges it was apparent which side was more comfortable in possession, and the scoreline at full time reflected that superiority.

The home side did have their moments in front of a passionate crowd, particularly in the first twenty minutes, but the pattern of the game was set early — Pinatar controlled the tempo, forced turnovers in dangerous areas and attacked with real purpose down both flanks.

Key moments

• Opening goal: The breakthrough came midway through the first half, when a quick passing sequence carved open the Melilla defence and a well-placed finish found the far corner.
• Double blow after the break: A second goal early in the second half effectively ended the contest as a competitive fixture, punishing a loose pass in midfield with a ruthless counter-attack.
• Kill shot: The third arrived soon after, a confidently taken effort from the edge of the box that left the goalkeeper with no chance and confirmed Pinatar's passage.
• Melilla's best spell: To their credit, the hosts did not collapse — a header from a corner and a long-range strike forced saves, but the clean sheet was never seriously threatened.

Tactical story

Pinatar's dominance stemmed from their control of the middle third. Their midfield trio rotated smartly, always offering the ball carrier an option, and their full-backs pushed aggressively to stretch a Melilla defence that became increasingly stretched as the game wore on. The visitors also pressed with discipline; rather than chasing the ball individually, they closed passing lanes and forced the hosts into long, hopeful deliveries that were comfortably dealt with.

Atlético Melilla's approach was built around defensive resilience and set pieces — a sensible strategy in a knockout tie — but once they conceded the opening goal, they had to step higher up the pitch, and that played directly into Pinatar's hands. The gaps between Melilla's midfield and defence widened with every passing minute, and the visitors' speed in transition made those gaps pay.

Standout players

Pinatar's attacking players shared the plaudits, with the goalscorers showing composure in front of goal and the wide men providing constant width and delivery. The central midfielder who set the tone — dictating tempo and winning second balls — was arguably the most influential player on the pitch. For Atlético Melilla, the goalkeeper prevented a heavier defeat with a string of saves, and the captain's work rate in midfield offered the home supporters something to applaud even as the tie slipped away.

What it means in the Copa del Rey

The Copa del Rey first round is unforgiving: it is a single-leg knockout, decided on the night with extra time and penalties available if the teams cannot be separated, and there is no safety net. For Pinatar CF, the 3-0 win brings a place in the next round, a boost to the club's profile and the possibility of a lucrative tie against higher-ranked opposition as the draw opens up.

For Atlético Melilla, the exit will sting, but the run itself was a source of pride for a club that has long been part of the football landscape in the Spanish enclave of Melilla. The focus now shifts back to league duty, where the priority will be turning the same defensive discipline into consistent points.
