Atlético Calatayud 2-0 CD Baztan — Atlético Calatayud booked their place in the next round of the Copa del Rey with a controlled 2-0 victory over CD Baztan, a result built on patience, defensive solidity and two well-taken goals in the second half. Unlike some of the round's more spectacular scorelines, this was a tie decided by discipline and game management rather than a flood of chances.

The Aragonese hosts were the more purposeful side throughout, but Baztan made them work for it, defending in numbers and threatening sporadically on the counter. In the end, Calatayud's superior quality in the final third proved decisive.

Match Overview

The first half was a study in containment. CD Baztan, travelling from the Navarrese valley that gives the club its name, set up with a compact mid-block designed to deny space between the lines. Calatayud circulated the ball patiently, probing down both flanks and looking for gaps that simply were not there in the opening forty-five minutes.

Chances were limited but the direction of travel was clear: Calatayud were dictating, Baztan were reacting. The visitors' best moments came from set pieces and long balls into the channels, but the home defence dealt with them comfortably, and the half-time whistle arrived with the scoreline still level.

Key Moments

• First-half pressure: Calatayud struck the woodwork with a curling effort from the edge of the box, the closest either side came before the interval.
• Opening goal after the break: The deadlock was broken shortly after the restart, when a well-timed run in behind was found by a threaded pass and finished calmly past the goalkeeper.
• The decisive second: Calatayud doubled the lead with a header from a corner, a goal that forced Baztan to abandon their cautious approach and commit men forward.
• Late resilience: The hosts managed the closing stages professionally, keeping the ball in the corners and limiting the visitors to a couple of speculative efforts.

Tactical Story

Calatayud's approach was built on patience. Rather than forcing passes into congested areas, they recycled possession from side to side, waiting for Baztan's defensive block to shift and lose its shape. The breakthrough came precisely because of that persistence: a quick switch of play followed by a diagonal ball into the channel caught the visitors' back line mid-adjustment.

Baztan's plan was logical — sit deep, stay compact, and look to spring forward on the break or from dead-ball situations. For an hour it worked reasonably well, but once they fell behind, the tactical equation changed. Pushing more players forward inevitably opened space at the back, and Calatayud's second goal punished exactly that gamble.

Standout Performers

Calatayud's central defenders were excellent, reading the game well and winning almost every aerial duel. In midfield, the player tasked with linking defence and attack consistently found the right pass, while the goalscorers showed the composure that ultimately separated the two teams. The goalkeeper's handling was secure whenever Baztan managed to test him.

For the visitors, the goalkeeper kept the score respectable with two strong saves in the second half, and the defensive unit as a whole earned respect for the discipline they showed during a long, demanding spell without the ball.

What It Means

A 2-0 home win in the Copa del Rey is a professional, satisfying outcome: progression secured without unnecessary drama, and a clean sheet to build on. Calatayud can now look ahead to the next round's draw with confidence, knowing they can break down organised opponents and manage a game from a winning position.

Baztan exit the competition with their heads held reasonably high. They made a higher-ranked opponent work hard for their goals, and the experience of a competitive cup tie on the road should serve them well as they return their attention to league football.
