AE Prat 1-6 Athletic Club: Copa del Rey Report

AE Prat 1-6 Athletic Club was a Copa del Rey tie that underlined the gap between lower-league ambition and top-flight ruthlessness. Athletic Club produced a commanding away performance on 30 October 2026, scoring six times against a brave but overmatched Prat side that still managed a consolation goal and plenty of home pride.

The result sends Athletic Club into the next round of the Copa del Rey with momentum, while AE Prat exit with the kind of performance that will be remembered by their supporters. For the visitors, the night was about efficiency, clinical finishing and professional control. For the hosts, it was a test of character against one of Spain’s most established clubs.

Match overview

AE Prat began with the energy expected of a home side in a cup knockout tie. They pressed early, tried to keep the ball in Athletic’s half and drew a loud response from the home crowd. But Athletic Club quickly settled into the rhythm of the match, moving the ball with purpose and stretching Prat’s defensive block from one side to the other.

Once the opening goal arrived, the contest took on a clear shape. Athletic’s superior speed of thought and movement in the final third created repeated chances, and Prat’s resistance became a matter of damage limitation rather than an attempt to dictate the game. Even so, the home side kept working and were rewarded with a goal that gave their supporters a moment to celebrate.

Key moments

• Early breakthrough: Nico Williams set the tone for Athletic Club with a sharp finish after a quick attacking move, giving the visitors an early advantage.
• Control tightened: Oihan Sancet doubled the lead with a composed effort from the edge of the area as Athletic began to dominate possession.
• Third before the break: Gorka Guruzeta made it 3-0 before half-time, converting after Prat’s defence was pulled out of position.
• Prat response: The hosts pulled one back with a determined attacking sequence, giving the home crowd a deserved lift and briefly raising hopes of a comeback.
• Late surge: Athletic responded immediately through Alex Berenguer, then added further goals as Nico Williams completed his brace and a late finish rounded off the 6-1 scoreline.

Tactical story

Athletic Club’s approach was built on width and quick circulation. The visitors used their full-backs aggressively, pulled Prat’s midfield toward the flanks and then attacked the spaces that opened in central areas. Sancet’s movement between the lines was particularly difficult to track, while the front line’s pace forced Prat to defend deeper than they would have liked.

AE Prat tried to stay compact and hit on the counter-attack. Their best moments came when they won the ball in midfield and moved it forward quickly, but sustaining those attacks against a top-flight opponent proved difficult. Athletic’s pressing often recycled possession within seconds, and the hosts spent long spells chasing the ball.

The game also highlighted Athletic’s squad depth. With rotation likely in a cup tie, their replacements maintained the same intensity and structure, ensuring there was no meaningful drop-off after the interval. Prat, by contrast, needed everything to go perfectly to stay in the contest.

Standout players

Nico Williams was the headline performer for Athletic Club, combining direct running with two goals and constant threat in the final third. Oihan Sancet controlled the tempo from midfield and contributed a goal, while Gorka Guruzeta’s movement and finishing gave Prat’s centre-backs a difficult evening.

For AE Prat, the goalkeeper produced several saves that kept the scoreline from becoming even more one-sided, and the captain’s leadership in midfield stood out despite the result. Their consolation goal was a reward for persistence rather than a reflection of the overall balance of play.

What the result means

For Athletic Club, the Copa del Rey victory is a straightforward step forward. A 6-1 away win brings confidence, allows key players to build rhythm and reinforces the club’s ability to handle cup ties against lower-league opposition with professionalism. The next round will bring a tougher test, but Athletic’s attacking display offered plenty of encouragement.

For AE Prat, the scoreline is harsh but the experience is valuable. Hosting a club of Athletic’s stature, scoring on the night and competing in front of a lively home crowd will remain a memorable chapter in the club’s cup history. The result may belong to Athletic, but the occasion belonged to Prat as much as anyone.
