Sporting Cristal edged AD Tarma 1-0 in a tense Copa de la Liga encounter on September 28, 2026, at the Estadio Unión Tarma. A second-half goal from Irven Ávila was enough to separate the sides in a match that was far more competitive than the scoreline suggests.

Match Overview

AD Tarma, the home side, set up to frustrate Sporting Cristal with a deep defensive block and quick counter-attacks. The visitors, one of Peru's most storied clubs, dominated possession but found it difficult to break down a disciplined and resilient Tarma defence. The first half ended goalless, with Cristal's best chance falling to Joao Grimaldo, who fired wide from a promising position.

After the break, Sporting Cristal increased the tempo and finally found the breakthrough. AD Tarma pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages but lacked the quality to trouble the Cristal goalkeeper.

Key Moments

The decisive moment came in the 54th minute. A slick passing move down the right ended with a low cross into the box, and Irven Ávila, showing his experience, nipped in ahead of his marker to poke the ball home from close range. It was a classic poacher's finish from one of the league's most reliable strikers.

AD Tarma's best opportunity arrived in the 78th minute when a free-kick from the left was met by a header that sailed just over the crossbar. The home crowd sensed a possible equalizer, but Sporting Cristal managed the game professionally to see out the win.

Tactical Story

Sporting Cristal deployed a 4-3-3 formation with a focus on width and overlapping full-backs. AD Tarma, meanwhile, used a 4-4-2 that dropped into a 6-3-1 without the ball, making it difficult for Cristal to find space centrally. The introduction of fresh wingers in the second half stretched Tarma's defence, creating the gap that led to the goal. Cristal's midfield trio controlled the rhythm, while Tarma's midfielders spent most of the match chasing shadows.

Standout Players

Irven Ávila was the match-winner for Sporting Cristal, his movement and finishing proving the difference. Joao Grimaldo was a constant threat on the wing, while centre-back Gianfranco Chávez marshalled the defence calmly. For AD Tarma, goalkeeper Pedro Ynamine kept his side in the contest with several fine saves, and captain Marco Rodríguez worked tirelessly in midfield.

Season Impact

The victory strengthens Sporting Cristal's position in the Copa de la Liga, keeping them on track for a deep run in the competition. AD Tarma remain without a win in the group but showed enough defensive organization to suggest they can still pick up points in upcoming fixtures. For Cristal, this was a professional away performance that underlines their title credentials.
