Union La Calera power past Universidad Catolica with 3-1 home win

Union La Calera produced one of their most convincing performances of the Chilean Liga de Primera season, defeating Universidad Catolica 3-1 at the Estadio Municipal Nicolás Chahuán Nazar on October 26, 2026. A strong second-half display turned a competitive contest into a clear home victory and handed La Calera a major boost in the league standings.

The hosts opened the scoring early through Matías Cavalleri, who capitalised on a defensive hesitation and fired a low shot into the bottom corner. Universidad Catolica responded with a spell of possession and equalised before half-time when Esteban Valencia finished neatly after a sustained attacking move. At that stage, the match looked finely poised, but La Calera raised their intensity after the interval.

Key moments

• 12th minute: Matías Cavalleri gave Union La Calera the lead with an assertive finish inside the box.
• 34th minute: Universidad Catolica levelled through Esteban Valencia after a patient build-up.
• 58th minute: La Calera restored their advantage when a quick press forced a turnover and led to a close-range finish.
• 79th minute: Cavalleri sealed the win with his second goal of the night, finishing a sweeping counter-attack.

La Calera’s pressing game caused Universidad Catolica problems throughout the second half. The visitors tried to play out from the back, but La Calera’s forwards closed down passing lanes aggressively and forced several rushed clearances. The third goal was emblematic of the contest: a turnover in midfield, a direct run and a calm finish. Catolica pushed forward late in search of a route back into the game, but La Calera managed the closing stages comfortably.

Tactical story

Union La Calera mixed energetic pressing with quick vertical attacks, and the approach paid off handsomely. Their midfield trio controlled the centre of the pitch, while the wide players stretched Catolica’s defensive line. Universidad Catolica had moments of quality in possession but lacked the same intensity without the ball, and their defensive transitions were punished repeatedly.

Standout performers

Cavalleri was the obvious match-winner with two goals, but the performance was built on a collective effort. La Calera’s midfield worked tirelessly to win second balls, and the back line stood firm after taking the lead for the second time. For Universidad Catolica, Valencia was a bright spot, but the team’s inability to contain La Calera’s counter-attacks proved decisive.

Table impact

The victory gives Union La Calera an important three points as they look to climb the Liga de Primera table and stay in touch with the teams competing for continental qualification. For Universidad Catolica, the defeat is a setback in their own pursuit of a high finish. With the season entering a crucial phase, La Calera will hope this performance becomes a turning point, while Catolica must regroup quickly.
