Union San Felipe and Deportes Temuco played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in Chile’s Liga de Ascenso, with the home side twice recovering to deny the visitors a valuable away victory. At the Estadio Municipal de San Felipe, the match delivered the kind of momentum swings that have become typical of a tightly packed second-tier promotion race, leaving both teams with positives but also a sense of what might have been.

Match overview

Union San Felipe started with intent, pressing high and looking to force Deportes Temuco into mistakes in their own half. The visitors, however, were compact and dangerous on the break, and they opened the scoring against the run of play when a turnover in midfield released Matías Villarroel, who finished low beyond the goalkeeper.

San Felipe responded well. Their equaliser came through Cristóbal Salinas, whose curling effort from the edge of the box found the far corner. The home side continued to dominate territory before the break, but Temuco’s defensive discipline kept the game level at half-time.

The second half followed a similar pattern: San Felipe pushed forward, Temuco sat deeper and threatened from set pieces and counters. The visitors retook the lead from a corner, with a powerful header punishing some slack marking. San Felipe threw on extra attacking options and finally found a late equaliser when a substitute rose highest to convert a cross from the right.

Key moments

• 17th minute: Deportes Temuco take the lead through Matías Villarroel after a quick transition.
• 34th minute: Cristóbal Salinas equalises for Union San Felipe with a well-placed effort from outside the box.
• 58th minute: Temuco restore their advantage with a header from a corner.
• 84th minute: San Felipe equalise again as a substitute heads home a deep cross.
• 90+2 minutes: Both sides have half-chances in a frantic finish, but neither can find a winner.

Tactical story

San Felipe’s approach was built around width and quick switches of play. Their full-backs pushed high, trying to pin Temuco’s midfielders back and create space for the attacking midfielders between the lines. That worked for long spells, but it also left them exposed to counters, which Temuco used intelligently.

Temuco’s mid-block was well organised. They allowed San Felipe possession in less dangerous areas and then looked to spring forward through the channels. Their set-piece threat was a constant problem, and it produced their second goal. San Felipe’s late response showed character, but the home side will feel they should have turned territorial control into three points.

Standout performers

Cristóbal Salinas was at the heart of San Felipe’s best attacking moments, combining creativity with a willingness to shoot from distance. Villarroel was Temuco’s most dangerous outlet, linking play and giving the home defence something to think about throughout. Both goalkeepers also made important saves in the second half, ensuring the match remained balanced.

What it means

The point keeps Union San Felipe in the conversation around the promotion places, though their inability to hold onto a result remains a concern. Deportes Temuco will take encouragement from an unbeaten away performance against a direct rival, but they will also rue not seeing out the game after taking the lead twice. In a league where fine margins decide the table, this was a result that felt both useful and frustrating for both camps.
