Curicó Unido Strike Late to Beat Santiago Wanderers 2-1 in Liga de Ascenso

Curicó Unido left Valparaíso with a valuable 2-1 away win over Santiago Wanderers in the Chilean Liga de Ascenso on October 11, 2026. The result swings momentum in the promotion race and leaves Wanderers with a frustrating home defeat after a bright opening spell.

Played at the Estadio Elías Figueroa Brander, the match lived up to its billing as a clash between two clubs with promotion ambitions. Wanderers started aggressively, pressing high and forcing Curicó into early clearances, but the visitors grew into the contest and punished the home side after the break.

Match Overview

Santiago Wanderers controlled possession in the first half, using the width of the pitch to stretch Curicó Unido’s back four. Their reward came in the 34th minute when Matías Plaza arrived at the back post to convert a low cross from the right. The stadium erupted, and for a while it looked like the home side would take a lead into half-time.

Curicó Unido, however, stayed compact and waited for turnovers. Their midfield trio began to win second balls, and the equalizer arrived in the 58th minute through Felipe Ortiz, who curled a shot beyond the Wanderers goalkeeper after a quick transition. The away side then found a winner in the 81st minute, Nicolás Barrios finishing calmly inside the box after a defensive mix-up.

Key Moments

• 34’ – Santiago Wanderers 1-0: Matías Plaza scores from close range after a well-worked move down the right.
• 58’ – Santiago Wanderers 1-1: Felipe Ortiz equalizes with a precise low finish from the edge of the area.
• 81’ – Santiago Wanderers 1-2: Nicolás Barrios pounces on a loose ball and beats the goalkeeper one-on-one.
• 90+4’ – Wanderers demand a penalty for a challenge in the box, but the referee waves play on.

Tactical Story

Wanderers lined up with a 4-3-3 and tried to dominate through quick combinations in wide areas. For 45 minutes it worked, but their inability to score a second goal proved costly. As legs tired, Curicó’s 4-4-2 block became more difficult to break down, and the visitors’ counter-attacks grew sharper with every minute.

Curicó Unido deserve credit for their game management. They absorbed pressure without panicking, then changed the tempo after the interval. Their two goals both came from moments when Wanderers lost possession in midfield, a pattern that will concern the home coaching staff.

Standout Players

Felipe Ortiz was the engine of Curicó’s comeback, combining energy with composure in front of goal. Nicolás Barrios took his winning chance with the confidence of a striker in form. For Wanderers, Matías Plaza was the brightest attacking threat, while goalkeeper Mauricio Viana made two important saves to keep the score level before the late winner.

Liga de Ascenso Table Impact

The three points lift Curicó Unido into a stronger position in the Liga de Ascenso standings and reinforce their credentials as a promotion contender. Santiago Wanderers, meanwhile, miss the chance to close the gap on the teams above them. In a division where away wins are precious, this result could prove significant when the season reaches its decisive phase.

Wanderers will need to respond quickly, especially with a demanding run of fixtures ahead. Curicó Unido will take confidence from a disciplined road performance that combined resilience with ruthlessness in the final third.
