Colo Colo 1-0 Puerto Montt: Second-Half Header Secures Chilean Cup Advantage

Colo Colo claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Puerto Montt in the Chilean Cup on October 7, 2026, at the Estadio Monumental. A second-half header from defender Maximiliano Falcón proved the difference as the Cacique took a slender lead from a tense cup encounter.

Puerto Montt, the lower-division challengers, arrived with a clear plan: defend deep, disrupt Colo Colo's rhythm, and threaten from set pieces. For long stretches, it worked. Colo Colo dominated possession but found the visitors' goalkeeper in inspired form until the breakthrough finally arrived after the hour mark.

Match Overview

Colo Colo controlled the opening exchanges, with their midfield trio circulating the ball quickly and the full-backs pushing high. Puerto Montt defended in a narrow 5-4-1 shape, forcing the home side wide and crowding the penalty area. The first clear chance fell to Colo Colo in the 18th minute, but a low shot from the edge of the box was well saved.

The game opened up after halftime as Puerto Montt tired and Colo Colo increased the tempo. The decisive moment came in the 64th minute when a whipped corner from the right found Falcón, who rose above his marker and powered a header into the bottom corner. Puerto Montt responded with a late surge, but Colo Colo's defense held firm.

Key Moments

• 18th minute: Colo Colo's first shot on target, a stinging drive from 20 yards, is pushed away by the Puerto Montt goalkeeper.
• 39th minute: Puerto Montt nearly score against the run of play, but a glancing header goes inches wide.
• 64th minute: Goal! Maximiliano Falcón heads home from a corner to give Colo Colo a 1-0 lead.
• 82nd minute: Colo Colo almost double the lead, but a curling effort strikes the outside of the post.

Tactical Story

Colo Colo's manager set up with a 4-3-3, using the width of the Monumental pitch to stretch Puerto Montt's low block. The visitors' back five stayed compact, but the constant crossing and overlapping runs eventually told. Puerto Montt's best moments came on the counter, with their lone striker holding the ball up while midfielders sprinted forward. However, they lacked the final pass to truly trouble the home goalkeeper.

The match was a classic cup tie: one team with superior resources, the other with organization and belief. Colo Colo's patience was rewarded, but the narrow scoreline leaves the tie far from settled. Puerto Montt will believe they can overturn the deficit at home, especially if they can find more quality in the final third.

Standout Players

Maximiliano Falcón was the match-winner, not only for his goal but also for his defensive dominance. He won several aerial duels and calmly dealt with Puerto Montt's late crosses. Colo Colo's goalkeeper made one important save to preserve the clean sheet, while the midfield captain controlled the tempo. For Puerto Montt, the goalkeeper and the left-sided centre-back were outstanding despite the defeat.

What It Means for the Copa Chile Tie

Colo Colo take a 1-0 advantage into the second leg of this Chilean Cup matchup. It is a lead they deserved, but it is also a fragile one. Puerto Montt will host the return leg with nothing to lose, knowing a single goal could change the entire complexion of the tie. For Colo Colo, the focus will be on finishing their chances and avoiding the kind of late drama that cup football so often delivers.
