Rwanda U17 Edge Ethiopia U17 2-1 in CAF U17 Championship Thriller

Rwanda U17 claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ethiopia U17 in the CAF U17 Championship on 19 October 2026, producing a disciplined and clinical display at 6:30 pm local time. The win gives Rwanda a vital three points in the group stage and leaves Ethiopia needing a response in their next outing.

The match was competitive from the first minute, with both sides showing the energy and unpredictability typical of youth tournament football. Rwanda’s structure and pressing proved decisive, while Ethiopia’s flashes of individual skill kept the contest alive until the final whistle.

Match Overview

Rwanda started brightly, pressing high and forcing Ethiopia into early mistakes. Their reward came midway through the first half when a well-worked move down the right ended with a low cross converted at the back post. Ethiopia responded well and equalised before the break with a fine individual effort, cutting inside from the left and curling a shot beyond the goalkeeper.

The second half was tighter, with both teams cautious about committing too many players forward. Rwanda regained the lead from a set piece, as a corner was flicked on and turned in from close range. Ethiopia pushed for a second equaliser and created several half-chances, but Rwanda’s defence held firm, with the goalkeeper making a crucial save late on.

Key Moments

• 18th minute: Rwanda take the lead with a back-post finish after a flowing move down the right.
• 39th minute: Ethiopia equalise through a superb curling effort from the edge of the box.
• 57th minute: Rwanda restore their advantage from a corner, scoring from close range.
• 78th minute: Ethiopia’s best chance of the second half is kept out by a strong save.

Tactical Story

Rwanda set up in a compact 4-3-3 and used their wide players effectively, stretching Ethiopia’s back line and creating space in the channels. Their midfield trio worked tirelessly, winning second balls and disrupting Ethiopia’s rhythm. The decision to target set pieces also paid off, with the winning goal coming from a corner routine.

Ethiopia showed plenty of promise in possession, particularly through their left-sided attacker, but they struggled to break down Rwanda’s low block in the final 20 minutes. Their best moments came on the counter, yet a lack of composure in the final third cost them a share of the points.

Standout Players

Rwanda’s captain led by example in midfield, breaking up play and starting attacks. The right winger was a constant threat and provided the assist for the opening goal. The goalkeeper also deserves credit for a late save that preserved the victory.

For Ethiopia, the left winger was the standout performer, scoring a brilliant equaliser and creating several chances. Their centre-back was solid for long periods but was beaten twice from set pieces.

Group Stage Impact

The result lifts Rwanda into a strong position in their group and gives them confidence ahead of their next match. Ethiopia, meanwhile, will need to tighten up defensively and convert their promising attacking spells into goals. With youth tournaments often decided by fine margins, Rwanda’s ability to win the key moments could prove crucial.

The CAF U17 Championship continues to showcase the next generation of African talent, and this match was a fine example of the passion and quality on display. Rwanda’s victory will be remembered for its resilience, while Ethiopia will take encouragement from a spirited performance.
