Zambia U20 opened their CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Namibia U20 on Sunday. A dominant first-half display and two further goals after the break put Zambia in complete control of the tie.

Zambia U20 were sharper, faster and more clinical in front of goal, while Namibia U20 struggled to cope with their opponents’ pressing and quick transitions. The scoreline reflects Zambia’s superiority, and it gives them a healthy advantage ahead of the second leg.

Match overview

Zambia U20 started on the front foot, pressing Namibia’s defence and forcing early mistakes. The opening goal arrived in the 18th minute when Chanda Mwape intercepted a poor pass and finished calmly. Namibia tried to respond, but they were repeatedly caught in possession in midfield, and Zambia doubled their lead just before half-time through Emmanuel Mwaba.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Zambia controlled possession, created chances and looked dangerous every time they attacked. The third goal came in the 82nd minute, with Mwape grabbing her second of the match. Namibia’s best moments came from set pieces, but they rarely tested Zambia’s goalkeeper. The match ended with Zambia in full command of the qualifier.

Tactical story

Zambia U20’s high pressing was the defining feature of the match. They won the ball back quickly in midfield and attacked with purpose, often catching Namibia out of shape. The front three interchanged positions constantly, making it difficult for Namibia’s defenders to pick up runners. Zambia’s midfield also dominated the second balls, ensuring the pressure rarely relented.

Namibia U20 tried to build from the back but were undone by Zambia’s intensity. Their defensive line sat too deep at times, inviting waves of attacks, and their attempts to play out from goal often ended in turnovers. Going forward, Namibia showed glimpses of quality on the wings, but the final pass was lacking. They will need a vastly improved performance in the second leg to keep the tie alive.

Standout players

Chanda Mwape was the star of the show for Zambia U20, scoring twice and leading the line with energy and intelligence. Emmanuel Mwaba was also impressive, adding a goal and creating chances with clever movement. In midfield, Zambia’s captain controlled the tempo and broke up Namibia’s attacks. For Namibia, the goalkeeper made several saves to keep the score respectable, but the team struggled as a unit.
