Renaissance de Berkane delivered a composed and efficient away performance to defeat Star Sport Academy 2-0 in the CAF Champions League on 18 October 2026. The visitors combined defensive discipline with two well-timed goals, leaving the home side with a difficult result to digest.

Match overview

Star Sport Academy began with energy and looked to impose themselves through quick passing and direct running. Berkane, however, absorbed the early pressure without panic and gradually took control of the tempo. The visitors opened the scoring midway through the first half and doubled their lead after the break, then managed the game expertly to protect the clean sheet.

The home side had moments of promise, particularly down the flanks, but Berkane’s experience showed in the decisive areas. The Moroccan side defended their box well, won the important second balls, and looked dangerous whenever they broke forward.

Key moments

• 23rd minute: Renaissance de Berkane took the lead with a well-worked move, finished calmly after a low cross into the penalty area.
• 38th minute: Star Sport Academy created their best chance of the first half, but a firm save kept the visitors ahead.
• 61st minute: Berkane doubled the advantage with a clinical counter-attack, punishing the hosts for committing numbers forward.
• 79th minute: The visitors’ goalkeeper made a key intervention to deny Star Sport Academy a route back into the contest.

Tactical story

Berkane’s game plan was built on compactness and control. Their midfield block limited the space between the lines, forcing Star Sport Academy into sideways passes and hopeful crosses. When the hosts lost possession, Berkane transitioned quickly, using the width of the pitch to stretch the defence.

Star Sport Academy showed plenty of enthusiasm and pressed with intent, but their final decision-making let them down in the attacking third. They struggled to break through Berkane’s central defensive pairing and became increasingly vulnerable to counter-attacks as the match wore on.

Standout performers

Berkane’s centre-backs were outstanding, winning headers and stepping out to intercept passes when necessary. The midfield anchor controlled the rhythm and protected the back line, while the forward line showed sharp movement and clinical finishing. The goalkeeper also deserves credit for a composed display and an important second-half save.

For Star Sport Academy, the goalkeeper kept the score down with several strong stops, and their left winger was the team’s most consistent attacking outlet. The hosts will need more from their central midfield in the return fixture or their next continental test.

What it means

The result puts Renaissance de Berkane in a strong position and highlights their ability to win away in the CAF Champions League. Their balance between defensive solidity and quick attacking transitions will make them a difficult opponent for anyone in the competition. Star Sport Academy, meanwhile, must regroup quickly and find greater composure in front of goal if they are to recover from this setback.
