Horoya AC claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Al Merreikh in the CAF Champions League, with Mohamed Camara’s second-half goal separating the sides in a tense continental encounter.

Horoya AC produced a disciplined and patient performance to edge Al Merreikh in a match that demanded concentration from both teams. The only goal arrived in the 63rd minute, and from that point onward the home side had to withstand pressure and manage the game cleverly to protect a result of real value.

A cautious opening

The first half was played at a measured pace, with both teams wary of leaving space behind their defensive lines. Al Merreikh looked comfortable in possession and tried to build attacks through midfield, but Horoya AC maintained a compact shape and denied easy access to the penalty area. The home side’s best moments came from quick transitions, though the final ball was often cut out before it could reach the forward runners.

Chances were scarce, but the tactical battle was absorbing. Horoya pressed in short bursts, forcing Al Merreikh into sideways passes, while the visitors relied on width to stretch the defence. Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested in the early stages, which set the stage for a second half that would be decided by one decisive moment.

The decisive moment

That moment arrived in the 63rd minute. Horoya AC won the ball in midfield and moved it forward quickly. The attack ended with Mohamed Camara finding space on the edge of the area and striking a low effort beyond the goalkeeper. The goal was greeted with relief as much as celebration, and it changed the complexion of the match immediately.

Al Merreikh responded with urgency. They pushed more players forward, increased the tempo of their passing and began to deliver crosses into the box. Horoya’s defence was forced into a series of clearances, and the home goalkeeper made an important save late on to preserve the lead. Each passing minute increased the tension, but Horoya’s back line held its nerve.

Tactical story: compact shape and game management

Horoya AC’s victory was built on organisation. Their midfield screened the defence effectively, forcing Al Merreikh to play around them rather than through them. When the visitors did find space on the flanks, Horoya’s centre-backs dealt with the deliveries and protected the central areas. The home side also showed excellent game management after scoring, slowing the tempo when possible and committing only when the chance to counter was clear.

Al Merreikh will feel they had enough possession to take something from the match, but their attacking play lacked the final penetration required against a well-drilled opponent. Their best chances came from set pieces and crosses, yet Horoya’s defensive discipline never cracked.

Standout performers

• Mohamed Camara (Horoya AC): Scored the winning goal with a composed finish and worked hard defensively.
• Horoya AC goalkeeper: Made a vital late save and commanded his area under pressure.
• Horoya AC centre-backs: Won crucial headers and remained calm as Al Merreikh pushed forward.
• Al Merreikh midfield: Controlled long spells of possession but could not find the killer pass.

What the result means

The three points are a significant boost for Horoya AC in the CAF Champions League, giving them a platform to build on in a demanding continental campaign. For Al Merreikh, the narrow defeat leaves little margin for error in the matches ahead, but their performance showed enough attacking intent to suggest they can respond. In knockout-style continental football, moments like Camara’s goal often decide the difference between progress and elimination.
