Club Africain opened their CAF Champions League group-stage campaign with a disciplined 1-0 victory over TP Mazembe Englebert in Tunis on 26 October 2026, earning three valuable points through a second-half goal and a resilient defensive display.

Match overview

Club Africain set the tempo early, keeping possession patiently and forcing Mazembe into a deep block. The Tunisian side circulated the ball well through midfield but initially struggled to find space behind a compact back line. Mazembe, always dangerous in transition, threatened on the break and reminded the hosts that a single mistake could change the game.

The decisive moment came after the interval. A quick exchange on the right drew Mazembe’s defensive line across, and a low finish from inside the penalty area beat the goalkeeper at the near post. From there, Club Africain managed the game with maturity, slowing the tempo and protecting their narrow advantage.

Key moments

• 18th minute: Mazembe’s first clear opening came from a counterattack, but the shot was blocked by a well-timed challenge.
• 52nd minute: Club Africain broke the deadlock with a sharp move down the right and a composed finish.
• 78th minute: The home goalkeeper produced a strong save to deny Mazembe an equaliser from distance.
• 90+4: A late clearance relieved pressure as Mazembe pushed bodies forward in search of a leveller.

Tactical story

Club Africain’s 4-2-3-1 shape gave them control in central areas, with the double pivot screening counterattacks and the full-backs pushing forward selectively. Mazembe’s 4-3-3 looked to spring forward through the wide channels, but too often their final pass arrived under pressure. The home side’s compactness without the ball was the foundation of the result.

Standout performers

Club Africain’s goalkeeper was calm under late pressure, while the centre-back pairing dealt well with Mazembe’s direct running. The match-winner deserved credit for a mature finish, but the midfield screen arguably set the tone for the entire performance. For Mazembe, the wide forwards carried the biggest threat, though service into the box remained limited.

What the result means

The win gives Club Africain three points and early momentum in the group table, while TP Mazembe Englebert leave empty-handed and will need a response in their next continental fixture. For Club Africain, the challenge now is to carry the same defensive discipline into tougher away assignments.
