Borussia Dortmund secured a hard-fought 1-0 away victory over VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on 20 September 2026. A single second-half goal was enough to separate the sides in a tactical contest that saw Stuttgart control long spells of possession without finding a way through Dortmund's resilient defence.

Match overview

Stuttgart began the match with intent, pressing high and forcing Dortmund deep. The hosts created the better chances in the first half, but Dortmund's goalkeeper was equal to everything. The game's decisive moment arrived in the 72nd minute when Dortmund broke at pace and scored through Karim Adeyemi. Stuttgart pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but Dortmund defended their box with discipline and composure.

Key moments

• 14' — Stuttgart chance: A low cross from the right was met by a Stuttgart forward, but the shot was smothered by the Dortmund goalkeeper.
• 39' — Dortmund disallowed goal: Dortmund thought they had taken the lead, but the flag went up for offside after a quick counter.
• 72' — Dortmund 1-0: Karim Adeyemi received the ball on the left, cut inside, and drilled a low shot into the far corner.
• 84' — Stuttgart header: Stuttgart's best chance of the second half came from a corner, but the header cleared the crossbar.
• 90+3' — Dortmund hold on: A last-ditch block denied Stuttgart a late equalizer as Dortmund cleared their lines.

Tactical story

Stuttgart set up in a 4-2-3-1 and looked to dominate the ball through their central midfielders. Dortmund responded with a compact 4-4-2 out of possession, allowing Stuttgart possession in wide areas but packing the penalty box. That approach frustrated the hosts, who struggled to find space between the lines.

When Dortmund won the ball, they attacked directly. Adeyemi's pace was a constant outlet, and the winning goal came from exactly that pattern: a turnover, a quick pass forward, and a decisive finish. Stuttgart's full-backs pushed high in search of an equalizer, but Dortmund's defensive discipline held firm.

Standout players

Karim Adeyemi was the match-winner with a composed finish and a constant threat on the break. Dortmund's goalkeeper made several important saves, while the centre-back partnership dealt with Stuttgart's crosses. For Stuttgart, the midfield duo kept the team ticking, but the forward line lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

What the result means

The win keeps Borussia Dortmund in touch with the Bundesliga's leading pack and marks an important away result against a direct rival for European places. For VfB Stuttgart, it is a missed opportunity to climb the table and a reminder that possession without penetration can be costly. Dortmund's defensive performance will give them confidence for the challenges ahead, while Stuttgart must regroup quickly.
