Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2-1 SC Freiburg: Late Winner Settles Bundesliga Contest

Bayer 04 Leverkusen edged SC Freiburg 2-1 at the BayArena on Sunday night, with a late goal deciding a Bundesliga match that was tight, tactical and full of tension until the final whistle.

Leverkusen controlled long spells of the ball and created the better chances, but Freiburg remained dangerous on the counter and through set pieces. Just when the game seemed headed for a draw, the home side found one more attacking moment of quality and took all three points.

Match overview

The opening exchanges were played at a high tempo, with Leverkusen pressing aggressively and Freiburg looking to break through the wide channels. The home side’s first goal came from a patient move, but Freiburg’s equaliser arrived from a set piece and changed the mood inside the stadium.

After the break, Leverkusen pushed their full-backs higher and Freiburg dropped deeper. The visitors defended resolutely, but the pressure eventually told as Leverkusen’s substitutes added fresh energy in the final third.

Key moments

• 21st minute: Leverkusen took the lead. A quick combination on the edge of the box released the striker, who took one touch and finished firmly across goal.
• 58th minute: Freiburg equalised with a well-worked free-kick. The delivery was curled into a dangerous area, and a glancing header redirected it past the goalkeeper.
• 72nd minute: Leverkusen struck the post after a sweeping move down the left, with the rebound cleared desperately by Freiburg.
• 83rd minute: The winner arrived. A cut-back from the right found a late-arriving midfielder, whose first-time effort took a slight deflection on its way into the net.

Tactical story

Leverkusen’s shape allowed them to dominate possession, but Freiburg’s compact defensive block made it difficult to find clean entries into the penalty area. The home side’s best moments came when they switched play quickly and attacked the far post, forcing Freiburg’s back line to defend while moving towards their own goal.

Freiburg were disciplined without the ball and always carried a threat from set pieces. Their equaliser was a reminder of how dangerous they can be when the game becomes fragmented. However, they struggled to keep hold of the ball in the final 20 minutes, and that invited the sustained pressure that eventually produced Leverkusen’s winner.

Standout performers

Leverkusen’s centre-forward led the line well, scoring the opener and occupying both centre-backs throughout. The substitute who provided the assist for the winning goal also made a clear impact, adding directness at a stage when the game needed someone to take responsibility.

For Freiburg, the goalkeeper made several important saves, and the set-piece taker was at the heart of their best attacking moments. The visitors will feel they deserved something from the match, but they were punished for dropping too deep late on.

What the result means

Leverkusen keep themselves firmly in the chase at the top end of the Bundesliga table, while Freiburg miss the chance to climb closer to the European places. The win is a useful statement of resilience for Leverkusen, who showed they can find a way through even when the game is not fully under control.
