Cup upsets are the romantic side of the competition, but sometimes the stronger side simply does its job. Akademik Svishtov were sharper, more organised and far more ruthless in the final third, and the scoreline reflected the balance of play throughout.

How the Match Unfolded

The visitors started on the front foot, moving the ball quickly through midfield and pinning Benkovski inside their own half. The opening goal arrived inside the first half hour, and it was a move of real quality: a switch of play from right to left, a first-time cross, and a composed finish at the back post.

The second goal followed before the interval and effectively settled the tie. A misplaced pass in the Benkovski midfield was pounced on immediately, and the resulting counter-attack was finished with a low strike from the edge of the penalty area that gave the goalkeeper no chance.

Benkovski's best spell came at the start of the second half, when they pushed more bodies forward and forced two saves in quick succession. But the momentum was short-lived. Akademik Svishtov's third goal, midway through the second period, came from a set piece — a corner swung towards the near post and glanced in to end any remaining doubt.

Tactical Story

Akademik Svishtov's game plan was built around controlling the middle of the pitch. With a compact four in midfield, they denied Benkovski any easy routes forward through the centre and forced the hosts to play long, where the visiting centre-backs dominated in the air.

In possession, the visitors were patient and intelligent. They did not force passes, they switched the play regularly to stretch Benkovski's defensive block, and they consistently attacked the space behind the full-backs. It was a mature cup performance — the kind that wins ties without ever needing to be spectacular.

Standout Performers

The Akademik Svishtov striker was the outstanding player on the pitch, scoring twice and holding the ball up effectively to bring his midfielders into play. Their central midfielder controlled the tempo and was involved in two of the three goals.

For Benkovski, the goalkeeper prevented an even heavier defeat with a string of saves, and their captain never stopped driving the team forward despite the scoreline.

What the Result Means

For Akademik Svishtov, this was exactly the kind of display cup runs are built on: professional, disciplined and efficient. They advance with confidence and, crucially, with a clean sheet that will please their coaching staff.

Benkovski exit the competition knowing they were beaten by the better team on the night, but their second-half spell showed enough to suggest there is a platform to build on in league competition.
