Match overview

Sparta Petegem began the match on the front foot and created the first meaningful chances. Their movement in midfield caused problems for Vigor Wuitens Hamme, and the home side were rewarded with the opening goal. Hamme responded well, though, and finished the first half strongly as they searched for an equaliser.

The second half was a tense affair. Hamme eventually found the goal their improved play deserved, but Sparta Petegem did not panic. The hosts pushed forward again in the final minutes and found a late winner that sparked celebrations and secured a valuable home victory.

• Vigor Wuitens Hamme equalised after the break with a well-timed run into the box and a finish beyond the goalkeeper.
• Both sides had chances in the final 15 minutes, with Hamme hitting the side netting and Petegem forcing a strong save.
• Sparta Petegem scored the decisive goal late on from a set-piece situation, heading home from close range.

Tactical story

Sparta Petegem’s approach was patient and possession-based. They looked to draw Hamme out of their defensive block and then attack the spaces behind the midfield. That worked well in the first half, when the home side found gaps between the lines and created good chances.

Hamme adjusted after the break, pressing higher and forcing Petegem into longer passes. The equaliser came during their best spell of the match, but the visitors were ultimately punished for switching off at a late set piece. Petegem’s ability to stay composed after conceding proved decisive, and their bench made a positive impact in the final stages.

Standout performers

Sparta Petegem’s central defender was excellent throughout, winning key headers and organising the back line. The midfielder who provided the assist for the late winner also had a strong game, constantly linking play and finding pockets of space. For Vigor Wuitens Hamme, the goalkeeper kept his side in the match with several important saves, while the striker worked hard with limited service.

Table impact

The 2-1 win gives Sparta Petegem another important three points in the BSA D standings and maintains their strong home record. Vigor Wuitens Hamme will feel frustrated to leave empty-handed after an improved second-half display, but they can take encouragement from the fight they showed. In a division where fine margins decide so many matches, Petegem’s late winner could prove significant as the season develops.
