Goiás edge Avaí 2-1 in tightly contested Serie B clash

Goiás Esporte Clube claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Avaí FC at the Estádio Serra Dourada on September 21, 2026, strengthening their push for promotion from the Brazilian Serie B. In a match that ebbed and flowed, the home side showed greater cutting edge in the final third, scoring twice in the second half to overturn a spirited Avaí performance. The win keeps Goiás firmly in the promotion race, while Avaí are left to rue missed chances.

Match Overview

The first half was a cagey affair, with both teams prioritising defensive solidity. Goiás saw more of the ball but struggled to break down a well-organised Avaí defence that sat deep and looked to counter. The visitors created the best chance of the opening period when their striker broke clear, only to be denied by a fine save from the Goiás goalkeeper. At halftime, the score remained 0-0, but the tempo hinted at a more open second half.

That prediction came true almost immediately after the restart. Goiás upped the intensity, pressing higher and forcing Avaí into errors. The breakthrough arrived in the 54th minute when a driving run from midfield ended with a low shot that squirmed under the Avaí goalkeeper. The home crowd erupted, and Goiás doubled their lead just ten minutes later with a towering header from a corner.

Avaí responded well and pulled one back in the 72nd minute, capitalising on a defensive mix-up to slot the ball into an empty net. The final 15 minutes were tense, with Avaí pushing for an equaliser, but Goiás defended resolutely to secure the win.

Key Moments

• 54th minute: Goiás take the lead with a powerful low strike from the edge of the box.
• 64th minute: Goiás double their advantage as their centre-back rises highest to head in a corner.
• 72nd minute: Avaí pull one back after a defensive error leaves an easy finish.
• 88th minute: Avaí nearly equalise with a dipping free-kick that clips the top of the crossbar.

Tactical Story

Goiás set up in a 4-3-3 with a high defensive line, aiming to suffocate Avaí’s build-up play. Their midfield trio worked tirelessly to win second balls, and the full-backs provided width in attack. Avaí adopted a more reactive 4-4-2, looking to spring quick counterattacks through their pacey wide players. For much of the first half, that plan worked, but Goiás’s pressure eventually told.

The key tactical shift came when Goiás pushed their wingers narrower in the second half, allowing the full-backs to overlap and create numerical advantages out wide. That adjustment led directly to the first goal and forced Avaí to defend deeper. Although Avaí’s late surge caused problems, Goiás’s midfield shield protected the back four well in the closing stages.

Standout Performers

Goiás’s box-to-box midfielder was the standout, driving forward with purpose and scoring the opening goal. The centre-back who headed the second also delivered a commanding defensive display. For Avaí, their goalkeeper made several impressive stops to keep the score down, while their lone striker worked tirelessly and was rewarded with the consolation goal.

Season Impact

With this victory, Goiás move closer to the automatic promotion places, maintaining pressure on the teams above them. Avaí remain in mid-table, still within touching distance of the play-off spots but in need of greater consistency. The result also gives Goiás a crucial head-to-head advantage over a direct rival for promotion, which could prove vital come the end of the Serie B season.
