Vasco da Gama SAF produced a clinical away performance to beat Athletico Paranaense 3-1 in the Brazilian Serie A at the Ligga Arena in Curitiba. The Rio de Janeiro club combined sharp counter-attacking with composed finishing, handing Athletico a home defeat that leaves the Paranaense side with plenty to review.

Vasco’s victory was built on efficiency rather than prolonged domination. The visitors absorbed pressure early, struck at key moments, and then managed the game expertly after Athletico briefly threatened to mount a comeback. The three points strengthen Vasco’s push for a strong finish in the Serie A standings, while Athletico are left to reflect on a night of missed opportunities and defensive lapses.

Match overview

Athletico Paranaense began with intent, pressing high and forcing Vasco into several rushed clearances. The home crowd at the Ligga Arena expected an aggressive response, and Athletico’s full-backs pushed forward regularly in the opening exchanges. However, Vasco’s compact midfield block denied clear space between the lines, and the visitors gradually found rhythm through quick switches of play.

The match’s decisive period arrived before half-time. Vasco opened the scoring with a low, first-time finish after a flowing move down the right, then doubled their advantage with a well-worked set-piece routine that caught Athletico’s back line flat-footed. Athletico improved after the interval and pulled one goal back through a determined attacking sequence, but Vasco restored their two-goal cushion late on with a counter-attack that exposed the home side’s stretched shape.

Key moments

• 17th minute – Vasco take the lead: Rayan latched onto a pass inside the right channel and drilled a low effort beyond the Athletico goalkeeper to silence the home crowd.
• 39th minute – Coutinho doubles the advantage: Vasco won a free-kick in a dangerous area, and Philippe Coutinho curled a precise delivery into the far corner after a short lay-off.
• 58th minute – Athletico respond: Julimar gave the home side hope with a close-range finish after sustained pressure and a scramble inside the Vasco penalty area.
• 81st minute – Vegetti seals the win: Vasco broke quickly from an Athletico corner, and Pablo Vegetti finished calmly one-on-one to make it 3-1.

Tactical story

Vasco’s setup was designed to frustrate Athletico’s build-up and then attack the space behind the home side’s advanced full-backs. The visitors’ midfield stayed compact, forcing Athletico to circulate the ball sideways rather than penetrate centrally. When possession turned over, Vasco moved forward with purpose, often using three-pass sequences to create shooting opportunities.

Athletico’s best spells came when they increased the tempo after half-time and attacked through the left flank. Their goal was reward for that pressure, but the home side’s commitment to pushing numbers forward left them vulnerable to Vasco’s counter-attacks. The third goal underlined that trade-off: Athletico committed to a corner, Vasco won the second ball, and the visitors covered the length of the pitch in seconds.

Standout performers

Coutinho was central to Vasco’s control in possession, linking midfield and attack and delivering the set-piece that gave his side a crucial cushion. Vegetti’s late goal capped a tireless centre-forward display, while Rayan’s direct running caused problems throughout. For Athletico, Julimar was the brightest attacking outlet and took his goal well, but the home side’s defensive errors proved costly.

What it means

The 3-1 result gives Vasco da Gama SAF an important away victory in the Brazilian Serie A and adds momentum to their league campaign. Athletico Paranaense remain a difficult side to break down at home, but this defeat highlights the fine margins in a competitive division where points away from home are precious. For Vasco, the challenge now is to turn this performance into a consistent run; for Athletico, the focus shifts to tightening their shape and converting pressure into goals.
