Athletico Paranaense 2-1 Bahia: Late Zapelli Strike Seals Brasileirão Win in Curitiba

Athletico Paranaense claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Bahia in the Brazilian Serie A on September 21, 2026, at the Ligga Arena in Curitiba. In a match that swung on fine margins, Athletico recovered from a Bahia equaliser and found a late winner through Zapelli, moving themselves into a more comfortable position in the Brasileirão standings while leaving Bahia to rue another away performance that promised more than it delivered.

Match overview

From the opening whistle, Athletico Paranaense looked to play with intensity and verticality. The home side pressed Bahia’s first line aggressively, forcing misplaced passes and creating turnovers in the middle third. Bahia, as is often their style, tried to slow the game down and build through possession, using their midfield rotations to draw Athletico out of shape. For long spells, the visitors saw more of the ball, but Athletico carried the greater threat in the final third.

The game’s first clear pattern emerged on the flanks. Athletico’s wingers repeatedly attacked the space behind Bahia’s advanced full-backs, while Bahia looked to Cauly and Everaldo to link play between the lines. That contrast made for an open, end-to-end contest, and by the time the first half ended, both goalkeepers had already been called into action.

Key moments

• 23' – Athletico Paranaense 1-0: Julimar opened the scoring with a well-taken finish from inside the box. After a quick turnover on the right, Athletico moved the ball into the penalty area with two touches, and Julimar swept a low shot past the Bahia goalkeeper.
• 41' – Bahia 1-1: Bahia responded before half-time. Everaldo found a pocket of space between Athletico’s centre-backs and converted a precise cross from the left, silencing the home crowd and sending the teams into the break level.
• 79' – Athletico Paranaense 2-1: Zapelli produced the decisive moment. Picking up the ball just outside the box, he shifted onto his left foot and curled a shot into the far corner, leaving the Bahia goalkeeper with no chance.
• 90+4' – Late Bahia pressure: Bahia pushed bodies forward in stoppage time and forced one final save from Mycael, but Athletico’s defence held firm to protect all three points.

Tactical story

Athletico Paranaense set up in a flexible 4-2-3-1 that became a 4-4-2 without the ball. Their primary aim was to deny Bahia central access, and they largely succeeded by keeping their midfield line compact and forcing the visitors wide. When Bahia did manage to progress down the flanks, Athletico’s full-backs recovered well and limited dangerous cut-back opportunities.

Bahia’s 4-3-3 gave them control in midfield for periods, especially in the first half after the opening goal. Cauly drifted into useful areas and Everaldo’s movement caused problems, but the visitors struggled to turn possession into clear chances. Athletico, by contrast, were more direct and more clinical. Their winning goal came from exactly the kind of half-chance that decides tight Brasileirão fixtures: a moment of individual quality from Zapelli after a disciplined team performance.

Standout players

• Zapelli (Athletico Paranaense): The match-winner. Beyond his 79th-minute goal, he was Athletico’s most creative outlet, linking midfield and attack and testing Bahia’s back line with intelligent runs.
• Julimar (Athletico Paranaense): Opened the scoring and caused constant problems with his direct running. His willingness to attack the space behind Bahia’s defence set the tone for the home side.
• Mycael (Athletico Paranaense): Made several important saves, including a stoppage-time stop that preserved the victory. His handling under late pressure was secure.
• Everaldo (Bahia): Bahia’s best attacking player. He took his goal well and was a constant threat with his movement in the box.
• Cauly (Bahia): Controlled much of Bahia’s tempo and created their clearest openings, but he was often left with too few options ahead of him.
