Matebele FC 4-2 Township Rollers: Hosts Stun Title Contenders in Six-Goal Thriller

Matebele FC produced one of the standout results of the Botswana Premier League weekend, defeating Township Rollers 4-2 in a pulsating encounter on Sunday night. A first-half brace from Tebogo Moyo and a second-half clincher from Kagiso Moloi powered the hosts to a famous win, handing one of the league’s biggest clubs a significant setback in the title race.

Match overview

Matebele set the tone from the opening whistle. Rather than sitting deep against a Township Rollers side known for controlling possession, the hosts pressed high and attacked the space behind Rollers’ advanced full-backs. The approach paid off inside seven minutes when Moyo latched onto a loose ball in the box and finished low into the corner.

Rollers responded with more of the ball, but Matebele’s energy in transition remained the game’s defining feature. The home side doubled their lead in the 19th minute through Moloi, who drove into the penalty area and placed a shot beyond the goalkeeper. Rollers pulled one back before half-time, but Matebele restored their two-goal cushion in first-half stoppage time — and from there, the match became an end-to-end contest.

Key moments

• 7th minute: Matebele took the lead when Tebogo Moyo pounced on a half-cleared ball and found the bottom corner.
• 19th minute: Kagiso Moloi doubled the advantage with a powerful run and a composed finish inside the area.
• 34th minute: Township Rollers halved the deficit through Mpho Baloyi, whose header from a right-sided cross beat the goalkeeper.
• 45+2nd minute: Matebele restored their two-goal lead as Moyo scored his second, finishing a swift counterattack.
• 67th minute: Rollers made it 3-2 when Thero Setsile curled a shot into the far corner after a spell of sustained pressure.
• 88th minute: Moloi sealed the win with his second goal, converting a low cross at the back post.

Tactical story

Matebele’s 4-3-3 was built around aggressive pressing and quick vertical passes. Their midfield trio worked tirelessly to close down Rollers’ central players, forcing the visitors into sideways passes before springing forward on the counter. The front three stretched Rollers’ back line, creating space for late runs from midfield and allowing Moyo and Moloi to attack from different angles.

Township Rollers enjoyed more possession and created chances of their own, particularly after half-time, but they were repeatedly exposed in transition. Matebele’s willingness to attack in numbers made the game open, and once Rollers reduced the deficit to 3-2, the hosts showed maturity to slow the tempo before striking again late on. It was a performance built on energy, structure, and ruthless finishing.

Standout players

Moyo was the game’s most influential attacker, scoring twice and constantly unsettling Rollers’ centre-backs with his movement. Moloi matched him with two goals of his own, while Matebele’s goalkeeper produced a crucial save at 3-2 to preserve the lead. For Rollers, Baloyi was their brightest spark, and Setsile’s goal briefly gave the visitors hope of a comeback.

Table and season impact

The result lifts Matebele into the top half of the Botswana Premier League standings and gives the club a major confidence boost. For Township Rollers, the defeat dents their title challenge and raises questions about their defensive shape away from home. Matebele’s ability to score four goals against one of the country’s strongest sides will be remembered as a statement performance, while Rollers must regroup quickly as the race at the top tightens.
