Rukinzo FC secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aigle Noir Makamba in the Burundi Premier League on Saturday night, with a second-half goal from Jean-Claude Niyonkuru proving the difference in a tightly contested encounter. The win gives Rukinzo three valuable points and another clean sheet as they continue to build momentum in the domestic league.

Match overview

The contest was played at a high tempo but with few clear-cut chances, as both sides prioritized defensive organization. Rukinzo lined up in a compact 4-2-3-1 system, looking to spring forward through quick transitions, while Aigle Noir Makamba enjoyed more possession but struggled to turn that control into meaningful shots on goal. The decisive moment arrived just after the hour mark, when Rukinzo’s pressure forced a scramble inside the penalty area and Niyonkuru reacted fastest to stab the ball home.

Key moments

• 21st minute: Aigle Noir created the first real opening, but a low shot from the edge of the box drifted just wide of the far post.
• 63rd minute: Rukinzo broke the deadlock when Niyonkuru pounced on a rebound after the visiting goalkeeper parried a driven effort.
• 84th minute: Aigle Noir pushed numbers forward and forced a sharp save from Rukinzo goalkeeper Eric Ndayishimiye.
• 90+3 minutes: Rukinzo cleared a late corner under pressure to seal the three points.

Tactical story

Rukinzo’s discipline without the ball was the foundation of the result. Their midfield screen protected the back four, forcing Aigle Noir into wide areas where crosses were easier to defend. When possession was won, Rukinzo looked to attack quickly through the central channels, and that directness eventually paid off. Aigle Noir’s build-up play was patient but predictable at times, and their inability to find space between the lines allowed Rukinzo to stay compact and control the most dangerous zones.

Standout players

Niyonkuru’s match-winning goal was the highlight of his energetic performance, while Ndayishimiye’s late save protected the lead at a crucial moment. Rukinzo’s center-back pairing also deserved credit for limiting Aigle Noir’s strikers to few clear sights of goal. For Aigle Noir, the midfield worked hard to control possession, but the final ball lacked the quality needed to break down a well-organized opponent.

Season impact

The victory strengthens Rukinzo’s position in the Burundi Premier League table and adds another clean sheet to their defensive record. In a league where away points are often hard to come by, the result could prove significant in the race for the top places. Aigle Noir Makamba will be disappointed to leave empty-handed after seeing more of the ball, but the narrow margin suggests they remain competitive. Both sides now turn their attention to the next round, with Rukinzo aiming to build on a result that underlined their resilience and game management.
