Kayanza United 1-3 Rukinzo FC: Away Side Take Command in Burundi Premier League Clash

Rukinzo FC produced a composed and clinical away performance to beat Kayanza United 3-1 in the Burundi Premier League on 18 October 2026. The 21:00 kick-off brought an energetic contest, but Rukinzo’s superior finishing and second-half control proved decisive.

The win strengthens Rukinzo’s position in the league table and gives the club an important boost on the road. Kayanza United, backed by their home supporters, showed flashes of attacking quality but were undone by defensive lapses and a lack of ruthlessness in key moments.

Match overview

Kayanza began brightly and tried to impose themselves through quick combinations in wide areas. Rukinzo absorbed the early pressure before taking control with a goal against the run of play. The equaliser lifted the home crowd, but Rukinzo responded strongly after the break.

In the second half, Rukinzo’s midfield screened the defence effectively and forced Kayanza into hurried passes. The away side’s third goal capped a professional display and underlined the difference in efficiency between the two teams on the night.

Key moments

• 21st minute: Rukinzo took the lead when Jean-Claude Niyonkuru finished a flowing move with a low shot.
• 39th minute: Kayanza equalised through Eric Ndayishimiye, who reacted fastest to a rebound in the box.
• 63rd minute: Rukinzo restored their advantage after Fabrice Ndikumana converted from close range.
• 81st minute: Niyonkuru scored his second of the match to make it 3-1 and settle the contest.

Tactical story

Rukinzo’s 4-3-3 shape gave them a solid platform. The midfield trio stayed compact, cutting off central passing lanes and forcing Kayanza to go wide. Once Rukinzo won possession, they moved the ball forward quickly, targeting the space behind Kayanza’s advanced full-backs.

Kayanza’s pressing created a few turnovers in promising areas, but their final ball was inconsistent. The home side also struggled to recover after losing possession in midfield, allowing Rukinzo to counter with numbers. That transition battle was the central story of the match.

Standout performers

Niyonkuru was the outstanding player on the pitch, scoring twice and constantly troubling Kayanza’s centre-backs with his movement. Ndikumana’s composure in midfield helped Rukinzo manage the tempo, while the away defence grew stronger as the match progressed. For Kayanza, Ndayishimiye’s equaliser was a reward for his persistence, but the team needed more support around him.

What the result means

Rukinzo FC will take great confidence from a 3-1 away win in the Burundi Premier League. The result shows they can manage difficult away conditions and punish teams in transition. For Kayanza United, the focus must be on defensive discipline and converting promising spells into goals.

The Burundi Premier League table remains tightly contested, and this result could prove valuable when the season reaches its decisive phase. Rukinzo leave with all three points; Kayanza are left to reflect on a night when small margins turned into a clear defeat.
