Vitesse Delft earned a 1-0 away win against Sonabel Ouagadougou in the Burkina Faso Division 1 on 18 October 2026, scoring in the first half and then defending that lead with a resolute performance at the back.

Match overview

Sonabel Ouagadougou began the match with intent, pushing men forward and trying to pin Vitesse Delft inside their own half. The visitors, however, were dangerous on the counter-attack and looked comfortable soaking up pressure. The opening exchanges were scrappy, with several fouls interrupting the flow, but Vitesse Delft gradually found space behind Sonabel's advanced full-backs.

The decisive goal came midway through the first half. A quick transition ended with a low finish from Moussa Diallo, giving Vitesse Delft a 1-0 advantage. Sonabel responded well before the break but could not find the equaliser, and the second half became a test of patience against a well-drilled visiting defence.

Key moments

• 9th minute: Sonabel won an early corner, but the Vitesse Delft goalkeeper punched clear under pressure.
• 26th minute: Vitesse Delft took the lead. Moussa Diallo received the ball on the edge of the box, shifted it onto his stronger foot and guided a low shot into the corner.
• 41st minute: Sonabel created their best chance of the first half from a header, but the effort went narrowly wide.
• 58th minute: Sonabel were awarded a penalty after a foul in the box, but the Vitesse Delft goalkeeper produced a crucial save to preserve the lead.

• 90th minute: Sonabel sent a late free-kick into the box, but the visitors headed it clear.

Tactical story: resilience under pressure

Vitesse Delft's victory was built on organisation rather than dominance. They defended in a mid-to-low block, kept their central defenders close together and forced Sonabel to play in front of them. The visitors' midfield worked hard to close the space between the lines, and their goalkeeper commanded his area well. When Sonabel did break through, Vitesse Delft were quick to recover.

Sonabel Ouagadougou had more of the ball but struggled to create clear openings against a packed defence. Their penalty miss was the turning point of the second half, and after that the home side became increasingly hurried in possession. Vitesse Delft, meanwhile, managed the clock well and looked dangerous whenever they broke forward.

Standout performers

Moussa Diallo's first-half goal proved to be the difference, and his movement in behind caused Sonabel problems throughout. Vitesse Delft's goalkeeper, Salif Kanazoé, was the other key figure, producing the penalty save that protected the three points. For Sonabel, the midfield trio kept working until the end, but the team lacked the final touch in the attacking third.

What the result means

Vitesse Delft move forward with an important away win and a clean sheet in the Burkina Faso Division 1. The result highlights their ability to defend a lead and grind out results on the road. Sonabel Ouagadougou, meanwhile, are left to reflect on a match they controlled for long spells but could not convert into points. Their response in the next fixture will be important as they look to climb the standings.
