Vikingur Reykjavik 2-2 Fram Reykjavik: Reykjavik derby ends all square

Vikingur Reykjavik and Fram Reykjavik played out a 2-2 draw in the Iceland Besta-deild karla on 25 October 2026, as the Reykjavik derby delivered four goals and a tense finish at Víkingsvöllur.

Vikingur twice led in front of their home supporters, but Fram showed resilience to respond on both occasions. The point keeps both sides involved in the league’s competitive picture, though Vikingur will feel they should have converted their periods of control into a victory.

Match overview

Vikingur began the derby with greater urgency, dictating possession and pushing Fram deep into their own half. The home side’s midfield circulated the ball well, and their wingers looked to isolate the full-backs. Vikingur took the lead in the 21st minute when a patient move ended with a shot from the edge of the box that found the bottom corner.

Fram responded well to going behind. They tightened their defensive shape and began to threaten on the break, drawing level in the 44th minute through a well-timed run and a finish from inside the penalty area. The equaliser arrived just before half-time and gave the visitors renewed belief.

Vikingur restored their lead in the 61st minute after a spell of pressure, with a header from a cross that gave the Fram goalkeeper no chance. But Fram refused to fold and equalised again in the 85th minute, capitalising on a quick counter-attack and finishing calmly to make it 2-2. Both teams pushed for a late winner, but the derby ended level.

Key moments

• 21st minute: Vikingur take the lead with a low shot from the edge of the area.
• 44th minute: Fram equalise before half-time with a composed finish inside the box.
• 61st minute: Vikingur regain the lead through a header from a cross.
• 85th minute: Fram break quickly and score a late equaliser to seal a 2-2 draw.

Tactical story

Vikingur controlled much of the ball and looked to build through midfield, using their full-backs to provide width. Their best spells came when they moved the ball quickly from side to side, forcing Fram’s defensive block to shift and creating space between the lines. However, Vikingur’s attacking commitment left them vulnerable to counters, especially after losing possession in central areas.

Fram’s plan was built on defensive discipline and fast transitions. They defended compactly, limited Vikingur’s clear chances for long periods and looked dangerous whenever they won the ball in midfield. Their equalisers came from exactly that approach: staying organised, surviving pressure and striking quickly when the opportunity appeared.

Standout performers

Vikingur’s creative midfielder was the game’s main conductor, repeatedly finding passes into attacking areas and setting the tempo of the home side’s possession. The winger on the left also caused problems with direct runs, while the centre-forward’s movement helped create space for others.

For Fram, the goalkeeper made important saves to keep the deficit manageable, and the midfield worked tirelessly to close down Vikingur’s passing lanes. The substitute forward who helped create the late equaliser made a significant impact, giving Fram an outlet and stretching the home defence in the final stages.

Besta-deild karla impact

The draw adds a point to both teams’ Besta-deild karla standings and keeps the Reykjavik rivalry firmly in the spotlight. Vikingur will be frustrated by twice surrendering a lead, particularly after controlling large parts of the match. Fram, by contrast, will view the result as a demonstration of their character and ability to compete away from home.

With the league campaign continuing, both sides will focus on consistency. Vikingur need to tighten their game management when protecting a lead, while Fram can build on the resilience shown in the derby. The head-to-head point leaves the rivalry balanced and sets up an intriguing return fixture later in the season.
