Hafnarfjordur delivered a seven-goal thriller in the Iceland Besta-deild karla on 21 September 2026, beating Stjarnan Gardabaer 5-2 in a match that swung on a devastating spell of attacking football. Five goals for the home side against one of the league's most recognisable opponents made this one of the standout scorelines of the round.

An open, end-to-end contest

Meetings between these two clubs have rarely lacked entertainment, and this fixture followed the script. Stjarnan started brightly, moving the ball quickly through midfield and asking questions of the Hafnarfjordur back line with early crosses into the box. The home side, however, carried a genuine cutting edge whenever they broke forward, and that difference in efficiency in front of goal proved decisive.

By the time the game reached its final half hour, the contest had turned into a demonstration of Hafnarfjordur's attacking depth, with goals arriving from multiple positions rather than through a single focal point.

Key moments

• Early opener: Hafnarfjordur struck first, converting a well-worked move down the right with a first-time finish inside the area.
• Stjarnan response: The visitors equalised with a header from a set piece, briefly levelling a game they had grown into.
• The decisive burst: Hafnarfjordur scored twice in quick succession either side of the interval to establish control.
• Late drama: Stjarnan pulled one back to make it 3-2 and set up a tense finish, but the home side responded with two more goals to close it out.

Tactical story: width, tempo and transitions

Hafnarfjordur's plan was built on width. Their full-backs pushed high and their wide forwards hugged the touchline, stretching Stjarnan's defensive block and creating space for late runs into the box. That pattern produced the majority of the night's chances, and Stjarnan's midfield struggled to track those runners as the match wore on.

Stjarnan's own threat came largely from set pieces and second balls, and for long periods their build-up play was neat without being penetrative. Once they were forced to chase the game, the gaps in behind became impossible to manage, and Hafnarfjordur's counter-attacking punished them clinically.

Standout performers

The home side's attacking unit deserves the credit: a two-goal contribution from the forward line and relentless movement from the wide players kept Stjarnan's defenders occupied throughout. The goalkeeper's save at 3-2, moments before Hafnarfjordur scored their fourth, was arguably the game's most important intervention. For Stjarnan, their set-piece delivery and the aerial presence of their centre-backs offered the brightest moments in an otherwise difficult evening.

Besta-deild karla table impact

Five goals in a single fixture is a major boost for goal difference in a division where European qualification and the title race are often separated by fine margins. Hafnarfjordur gain three points and momentum; Stjarnan leave with a result that will prompt hard questions about their defensive organisation, particularly in transition.

For the neutral, this was everything the Besta-deild karla is known for: high tempo, committed pressing, and goals. For the two coaching staffs, it was a night that highlighted both the attacking quality in the league and the cost of losing control of midfield.
