Akranes 4-4 Keflavik: Eight-Goal Thriller Ends All Square in Besta-deild karla

ÍA Akranes and Keflavík played out a remarkable 4-4 draw in Iceland’s Besta-deild karla on 24 October 2026, serving up one of the most entertaining matches of the season at Akranesvöllur. The teams traded goals throughout an open contest, and a late equaliser ensured the points were shared after a breathless second half.

With eight goals, swings in momentum, and chances at both ends, the match was a showcase of attacking football and defensive vulnerability in equal measure. For the neutral, it was a classic; for the two coaches, it was a night of mixed emotions as both sides let leads slip.

Match Overview

Akranes began brightly and looked dangerous whenever they attacked down the flanks. Their early pressure produced the opening goal, but Keflavik responded well and soon found rhythm through quick combinations in midfield. The first half alone produced four goals, with the teams heading into the break level at 2-2.

The second half was even more chaotic. Akranes edged ahead again, only for Keflavik to equalise almost immediately. When the home side scored what looked like the winner in the closing stages, Keflavik found one final response to make it 4-4. The final whistle brought relief for the defenders and applause from the stands.

Key Moments

• Early breakthrough: Akranes opened the scoring after a sustained spell of pressure, finishing from close range.
• Quick response: Keflavik equalised with a well-worked move through the middle.
• First-half exchange: Both sides scored again before the interval, setting up a 2-2 half-time scoreline.
• Late drama: Akranes took a late lead, but Keflavik found a fourth goal to rescue a point.

Tactical Story

The game was defined by transitions. Both midfields struggled to control the space between the lines, and every turnover seemed to lead to a chance. Akranes looked most dangerous when their wide players isolated the full-backs, while Keflavik thrived on quick passing combinations and runs in behind.

Set pieces also played a role in a match that never settled into a pattern. Defensively, neither side will be satisfied with the number of chances conceded, but the attacking intent from both teams made the contest compelling. The pace of the game rarely dropped, even as fatigue set in during the final 20 minutes.

Standout Performers

Akranes’ forward line caused problems throughout, with movement and link-up play that repeatedly opened up the Keflavik defence. The home side’s attacking midfielder was at the heart of most promising moves, while Keflavik’s wide players provided constant outlets on the counter.

Both goalkeepers were busy and made important saves, even if the scoreline suggests a difficult night for the defences. The Keflavik captain led by example in midfield, driving his team forward when they needed a response.

What It Means

A point apiece may feel like both a reward and a missed opportunity. Akranes will be frustrated to have conceded four at home, while Keflavik will take confidence from their resilience in coming back repeatedly. In a tight Besta-deild karla campaign, such dramatic draws can shape momentum, and both sides will need to tighten up defensively while preserving the attacking flair that made this match so memorable.
