Benin Ligue 1 result: Association Sportive du Port Autonome de Cotonou FC and Hodio played out a 0-0 draw at the Stade Mathieu Kérékou on Saturday night, a result that underlined the defensive discipline of both sides but left each camp frustrated by a missed opportunity to take all three points.

The hosts enjoyed the larger share of possession and looked the more purposeful team for long spells, especially after the interval. Hodio, however, defended with organisation and patience, narrowing the spaces between midfield and defence and forcing Port Autonome to work hard for every sight of goal. In a match of few clear-cut chances, the goalkeepers and centre-backs ultimately took the headlines.

Match overview

Port Autonome started with intent, pushing their full-backs high and looking to create overloads on the flanks. Hodio responded by dropping into a compact 4-4-2 block, inviting pressure and looking to spring forward on the counter-attack. That pattern gave the home side plenty of the ball but rarely allowed them a clean route into the penalty area. The second half opened up slightly as legs tired, yet the final pass remained elusive at both ends.

Key moments

• 14th minute: Port Autonome midfielder Prudence Dossou tested Aristide Hounkpatin with a low drive from the edge of the box, but the Hodio goalkeeper saved comfortably.
• 31st minute: Hodio produced their best counter of the first half, only for Rachidi Soglo to race off his line and smother the danger.
• 57th minute: A deep corner found a Port Autonome header, but Ibrahim Chabi cleared off the line with Hounkpatin beaten.
• 78th minute: Marcel Adjakpa curled a rare Hodio chance just wide of the far post.
• 90+2nd minute: Port Autonome won a late free kick in a promising position, but Hounkpatin claimed the delivery confidently.

Tactical story

The game was a clear contest between control and containment. Port Autonome’s 4-2-3-1 shape gave them control in midfield, with Dossou dropping deep to link play and the wide players stretching Hodio’s back line. Hodio’s 4-4-2 block was narrower and more reactive, but it worked: the visitors limited central penetration, defended their box well and were happy to let the home side circulate the ball in less dangerous areas.

Standout performers

Rachidi Soglo was alert when called upon in the Port Autonome goal, while Ibrahim Chabi produced the defensive moment of the match with his goal-line clearance. For the hosts, Prudence Dossou was the most inventive midfielder on the pitch, constantly asking for the ball and trying to break Hodio’s lines. Aristide Hounkpatin’s handling and command of his area were equally important for the visitors.

What the point means

Both teams take a clean sheet from the match, but only one point. For Port Autonome, the draw keeps their home record competitive and reinforces the value of their defensive structure. For Hodio, an away point against a possession-heavy opponent is a useful result, even if the attacking returns remain a work in progress. In the Benin Ligue 1 standings, the outcome leaves both sides with something to build on as the campaign develops.
