Match Overview

The game began at a high tempo, with both teams eager to impose themselves. Westerlo U21 looked to play out from the back and build through midfield, while Kortrijk U21 preferred a more direct approach, pressing high and looking to win the ball in advanced areas. The early exchanges were physical but also technical, with several young players showing composure beyond their years.

Westerlo took the lead midway through the first half after a well-worked move down the right. Kortrijk responded before halftime, equalizing with a penalty after a foul in the box. The second half was tighter, with chances limited until Westerlo found a late breakthrough that proved decisive.

Tactical Story

Westerlo U21’s approach was built on patient possession and quick switches of play. Their midfield trio rotated well, creating passing angles and allowing the full-backs to advance. The winning goal came from a classic transition: Westerlo won the ball in midfield, moved it forward quickly, and exploited the space left by Kortrijk’s advanced defenders.

Kortrijk U21 were dangerous on set pieces and used their physicality well in the final third. However, they struggled to maintain control after their equalizer, and their defensive line was caught too high for the decisive goal. It was a harsh lesson in game management for a young side that competed well for much of the match.

Standout Players

Mathis Smet was Westerlo’s hero, scoring the late winner and showing excellent composure in a high-pressure moment. The goalkeeper also deserved credit for a crucial second-half save. In midfield, Westerlo’s captain dictated the tempo and helped the team stay organized when Kortrijk pressed.

For Kortrijk U21, the penalty scorer was their most influential player, linking play and testing the defense with clever runs. The center-back pairing was strong in the air but will be disappointed with the space conceded for the winning goal. Overall, it was a performance that showed promise but also areas to improve.
