RS Waasland Beveren U21 and Kortrijk U21 played out a 0-0 draw in the Belgian U21 Youth League on 24 October 2026, with both defences holding firm through a closely contested encounter. The result reflected the competitive nature of the U21 division, where compact organisation and quick transitions often cancel out individual quality. Neither side found the decisive moment in the final third, but the match offered plenty of tactical intrigue and several encouraging individual displays.

Match overview

Waasland-Beveren U21 enjoyed the greater share of possession in the early stages, building patiently from the back and looking to use the width of the pitch. Kortrijk U21 responded with a disciplined mid-block, limiting central space and forcing the home side into sideways passing. The first half was played at a measured tempo, with both teams cautious about committing too many players forward.

After the interval, the contest opened up slightly. Waasland-Beveren pushed their full-backs higher and tried to create overloads on the flanks, while Kortrijk looked increasingly dangerous on the counterattack. However, the final pass was repeatedly cut out, and neither goalkeeper was forced into a sustained period of pressure.

Key moments

• An early Waasland-Beveren corner caused a brief scramble inside the Kortrijk penalty area before the visitors cleared their lines.
• Kortrijk U21 produced the sharpest counterattack of the first half, but the resulting low shot was comfortably gathered by the home goalkeeper.
• Shortly after the restart, a Waasland-Beveren winger cut inside from the left and forced a block at the near post.
• In the closing stages, Kortrijk won a free-kick in a promising position, but the delivery was headed clear by the home defence.

Tactical story

The game developed into a midfield chess match. Waasland-Beveren U21 wanted to dictate the rhythm through short, angled passes, while Kortrijk U21 were content to sit compact and spring forward when turnovers occurred. The visitors’ holding midfielders shielded the back four effectively, making it difficult for Waasland-Beveren to find clean entries into the penalty area.

Both coaches used substitutions to inject fresh energy in the second half, but the structural balance of the match remained intact. Waasland-Beveren’s late pressure produced a few crosses into the box, yet Kortrijk’s centre-backs dealt with them confidently. At the other end, Kortrijk’s best moments came from quick breaks, though the final decision was often rushed.

Standout performers

The two goalkeepers deserve credit for their concentration and handling, especially in a game where clear-cut chances were rare. Both defences also performed with maturity beyond their years, reading danger early and winning important aerial duels. In midfield, the holding players on each side set the tone with disciplined positioning and intelligent recycling of possession.

Season impact

The point leaves both sides with something to build on in the Belgian U21 Youth League standings. For Waasland-Beveren U21, the clean sheet is a positive foundation, even if the attacking sharpness was missing. Kortrijk U21 will take encouragement from their defensive organisation and counterattacking threat. In a development league, performances like this are as much about learning and composure as they are about the result.
