Hasselt U21 3-6 Lierse U21 — Lierse U21 delivered a high-scoring statement in the Belgian U21 Youth League, beating Hasselt U21 6-3 in a nine-goal contest that swung decisively after the break. The visitors’ attacking quality and ruthless finishing proved too much for a Hasselt side that competed well in spells but could not contain Lierse’s forward momentum.

Match overview

The game was open from the first whistle, with both teams showing a willingness to attack and press high. Hasselt U21 had their moments, particularly when they moved the ball quickly through midfield, but Lierse U21 looked the more dangerous side whenever they broke forward. The visitors’ movement between the lines created constant problems, and their ability to convert chances at key moments ultimately decided the match.

By the time the second half unfolded, the contest had become an end-to-end affair. Lierse’s sharper finishing and superior decision-making in the final third allowed them to pull away, while Hasselt were left to rue a series of defensive lapses in transition.

Key moments

• Early pressure: Lierse U21 started aggressively, pressing Hasselt’s back line and creating the first clear openings of the match.
• Hasselt’s response: The home side found a way back into the contest with a well-taken goal, briefly shifting the momentum.
• Second-half surge: Lierse raised their intensity after the break, scoring at regular intervals and taking firm control of the game.
• Late finish: Hasselt added a consolation goal, but Lierse had already done enough to secure a convincing three points.

Tactical story

Lierse U21’s success came from quick vertical passing and intelligent off-ball runs. They repeatedly exploited the space behind Hasselt’s full-backs, forcing the home defence to turn and defend toward their own goal. When Hasselt tried to press higher, Lierse responded with sharp combination play in midfield, bypassing the first line of pressure with ease.

Hasselt U21 showed attacking ambition and created several promising moments of their own, but their defensive structure was stretched too often. The home side struggled to protect the central areas when possession turned over, and Lierse’s forwards were quick to punish those gaps. In a youth league where development and results go hand in hand, this was a harsh lesson in game management for Hasselt.

Standout performers

Lierse U21’s attacking players were the headline act, combining movement, pace, and composure in front of goal. The midfield also deserved credit for controlling the tempo and recycling possession efficiently. Defensively, Lierse were not perfect, but they made the important clearances when Hasselt threatened to build sustained pressure.

For Hasselt U21, the performance offered positives in possession. Their midfielders found pockets of space and their forwards caused problems in one-on-one situations, but the team’s inability to defend transitions proved costly. The goalkeeper was called into action repeatedly and could do little about several of Lierse’s best finishes.

Season impact and standings

The 6-3 victory gives Lierse U21 an important boost in the Belgian U21 Youth League standings, adding three points and a healthy goal difference. High-scoring wins can be valuable in tight table races, and Lierse will hope this performance sets the tone for the weeks ahead.

Hasselt U21, meanwhile, will focus on defensive organisation and decision-making in transition. The home side showed enough going forward to suggest they can compete, but conceding six goals is a clear area for improvement. Both teams now turn their attention to the next round of fixtures, with Lierse carrying the momentum and Hasselt determined to respond.
