Excelsior Virton 3-4 Kermt Hasselt: Seven-Goal Thriller Ends in Heartbreak

Excelsior Virton and Kermt Hasselt produced the most entertaining match of the weekend in the Belgian Second Division, with the visitors edging a remarkable seven-goal contest 4-3. It was a game that swung one way, then the other, and kept everybody inside the stadium guessing until the final whistle.

For Kermt Hasselt, it is a famous away victory and a huge injection of confidence. For Virton, it is a painful defeat that will be difficult to process, having contributed so much to a spectacle that ultimately delivered nothing but frustration.

Match Overview

The tone was set early. Both sides committed numbers forward from the kick-off, and it became clear within ten minutes that defending was not going to be the priority for either team. The opening goal arrived quickly, and the pattern of trading chances was established.

By half-time the scoreboard was already ticking over nicely, with the teams exchanging goals in a frantic opening period. Midfielders had no time on the ball, tackles were flying in and both goalkeepers were being kept busy.

The second half was even more chaotic. The visitors twice moved ahead, only for the hosts to claw their way back into the contest on each occasion. As legs tired and space opened up all over the pitch, the game turned into a pure attacking contest.

Ultimately, Kermt Hasselt found the decisive goal in the closing stages, and this time Virton could not respond. The hosts pushed forward in the final minutes, throwing bodies into the box, but the equaliser never came.

Key Moments

• 9th minute – Early breakthrough: The deadlock is broken in the opening ten minutes as the visitors strike first.
• 26th minute – Virton respond: The hosts level with a well-placed finish after a spell of pressure.

Tactical Story

This was a game decided less by systems than by how readily both teams abandoned them. Virton wanted to attack at every opportunity, pushing their full-backs high and committing numbers into the opposition box. Kermt Hasselt, sensing the space this created, hit back with rapid counter-attacks.

The result was a match played at a frantic tempo, with the transition moments proving far more important than any period of structured possession. Both defensive units struggled in one-versus-one situations, and neither goalkeeper could do much about the quality of the finishing on display.

The crucial tactical detail was Kermt Hasselt's ruthlessness in front of goal. They had fewer sustained spells of pressure than Virton, but they converted their chances at a higher rate, and in seven-goal matches that is always the deciding factor.

Standout Performers

Kermt Hasselt's attacking players will rightly take the plaudits. Their movement in behind caused trouble throughout, and their finishing in the bigger moments was cool and precise. The winning goal, in particular, was taken with real conviction at a point when the game could have gone either way.

For Virton, the goalscorers did their job, and the team's attacking ambition was admirable. But the defensive performance will be the focus of the post-match review, with too many gaps appearing in the back line as the match wore on.

Season Context

Three points on the road in a seven-goal epic can be a season-defining result for a team with limited resources. Kermt Hasselt will travel home believing they can win anywhere, which is exactly the mentality needed to push up the table.

Virton, meanwhile, must find a way to keep their attacking identity while tightening up defensively. Scoring three goals at home and losing is a frustrating experience, but the performance showed enough quality to suggest better results are within reach if the balance is corrected.
