Union Rochefortoise 3-2 Koninklijke Lierse Sportkring — Union Rochefortoise pulled off one of the standout results of the Belgian Cup round on Sunday evening, knocking out Koninklijke Lierse Sportkring 3-2 in a tense, hard-fought cup tie that went right to the wire.

Match overview

Cup football is built on upsets, and Rochefort produced a performance that will be remembered for years. The hosts matched their more heralded opponents for intensity and tempo from the first whistle, and when the game opened up in the second half, they found the goals that sent the home crowd into raptures.

Lierse, a club with a proud history and a strong following, arrived expecting to progress, but they were met by a Rochefort side that defended with real grit and attacked with purpose whenever the opportunity arose. The final score of 3-2 was a fair reflection of a contest in which both teams created chances but only one showed the ruthlessness required to advance.

Key moments

• Early pressure: Rochefort started on the front foot, pressing high and forcing Lierse into hurried clearances.
• Opening goal: The hosts took the lead with a well-constructed move, finishing confidently to spark celebrations in the stands.
• Lierse response: The visitors equalised and then briefly looked the more likely side to take control of the tie.
• The decisive spell: Rochefort scored twice in a strong period either side of the interval to open up a two-goal advantage.
• Nervy finish: Lierse pulled one back to set up a tense closing stretch, but Rochefort held firm to see out the win.

Tactical story

Rochefort's approach was built on compactness out of possession and quick, direct football when they won the ball back. They refused to sit deep for long periods, instead pressing Lierse's build-up and forcing turnovers in dangerous areas — a tactic that directly led to at least one of their goals.

Lierse enjoyed more of the ball and created several clear openings, but their defensive line was repeatedly exposed by Rochefort's runs in behind. Cup ties often hinge on small details, and on this occasion, the hosts' willingness to take risks in front of goal paid off handsomely.

Standout performers

Rochefort's forward line deserves enormous credit for their clinical finishing, while the captain and central defensive partnership held the team together during Lierse's strongest spells. For the visitors, the attacking players produced moments of genuine quality, but the team as a whole will be disappointed with the way they conceded three goals against a lower-division opponent.

What it means

Progress in the Belgian Cup brings both prestige and a welcome financial boost, and Rochefort can now look forward to a place in the next round alongside some of the country's biggest names. For Lierse, the defeat is a painful early exit and a reminder that cup football offers no favours to reputations. The draw for the following round will be keenly anticipated by the Rochefort players and supporters alike.
