RFC de Liege booked their place in the next round of the Belgian Cup with a commanding 4-1 victory over Wellen on Sunday evening. In front of a lively home crowd, the hosts produced a ruthless attacking display to see off their lower-league opponents and avoid any hint of an upset.

Match Overview

From the first whistle, RFC de Liege took control of the contest, pressing high and forcing Wellen into early mistakes. The deadlock was broken in the 12th minute when a quick exchange on the edge of the box released the striker, who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner. Wellen responded well and stunned the home supporters with an equaliser on 29 minutes, capitalising on a rare defensive lapse to finish calmly on the counter-attack.

However, the parity lasted only until the 41st minute, when RFC de Liege were awarded a penalty for a clumsy challenge inside the area. The skipper stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to restore the lead. That goal proved the turning point, and the hosts never looked back.

Key Moments

• 12' – 1-0: A slick move down the right ended with a crisp finish from RFC de Liege's leading scorer.
• 29' – 1-1: Wellen punished a momentary lapse in concentration, breaking quickly and slotting past the advancing keeper.
• 41' – 2-1: A confident penalty from the captain put the home side back in front just before the break.
• 67' – 3-1: A towering header from a corner gave RFC de Liege breathing space.
• 85' – 4-1: A substitute wrapped up the scoring with a composed finish after a driving run into the box.

Tactical Story

RFC de Liege set up in a 4-3-3, dominating possession and using their wide players to stretch Wellen's back four. The visitors initially tried to sit deep and hit on the break, which worked for their equaliser, but they struggled to cope with the constant pressure thereafter. As the game wore on, Wellen's midfield dropped deeper, leaving a large gap between the lines that the hosts exploited time and again.

Standout Performers

The RFC de Liege captain was instrumental, dictating tempo from midfield and converting the crucial penalty. The left winger was a constant threat, delivering the corner for the third goal and causing problems with his direct running. For Wellen, their goalkeeper made several fine saves to keep the score respectable, while the lone striker took his goal well and worked tirelessly with limited service.

Cup Progress

The win sends RFC de Liege into the next round of the Belgian Cup, where they will face either a fellow professional side or another lower-league giant-killer. For Wellen, the cup run ends here, but they can take pride in a spirited performance against higher-ranked opposition. RFC de Liege will now switch focus back to their league campaign, buoyed by a confidence-boosting victory.
