Racing Genk Avoid Upset with 2-0 Belgian Cup Win at Excelsior Virton

Racing Genk avoided a potential Belgian Cup upset with a professional 2-0 victory away to Excelsior Virton on 18 October 2026. Goals either side of the interval gave Genk control, and although Virton competed with energy and organisation, the visitors' quality in key moments proved decisive.

Match overview

Excelsior Virton, playing at home, began with the kind of intensity expected from the underdog in a cup tie. They pressed selectively, looked to disrupt Genk's rhythm, and tried to use set pieces as a route to goal. Genk, however, remained composed and gradually imposed their possession game.

The breakthrough came in the first half, when Genk found space in the final third and finished with the kind of precision that separates top-flight sides from lower-league opposition. Virton responded with determination, but the second goal after the break effectively settled the contest.

Key moments

• Genk's first-half opener: A patient attacking move ended with a finish that gave the visitors the lead and rewarded their control.
• Virton's best spell: The hosts pushed forward early in the second half, forcing a few set pieces and testing Genk's defensive concentration.
• The decisive second: Genk struck again after the interval to remove any doubt about the result and take full control of the tie.

Tactical story

Genk's game plan was based on possession and patient probing. They kept the ball moving, used their midfield to dictate tempo, and waited for Virton's defensive lines to open. The hosts defended with commitment, but the sustained pressure eventually created cracks.

Virton deserve credit for making the tie competitive for long spells. They defended in a compact shape, worked hard to close down space, and tried to counter when possible. The difference was Genk's ability to produce a moment of quality when the game was still in the balance. In knockout football, that can be enough.

What it means

For Racing Genk, the priority was progression, and they achieved it without needing extra time or a dramatic finish. A 2-0 away win in the Belgian Cup is a solid result, particularly against a motivated lower-league side. Genk's defensive composure and attacking patience were both on display.

Excelsior Virton exit the competition with a creditable performance. They were not overwhelmed, and they showed enough organisation to suggest they can compete strongly in their own league campaign. Ultimately, Genk's superior quality in the final third made the difference and sent the visitors safely into the next round.
