İmişli FK edged Shamakhi FK 2-1 in a tightly contested Azerbaijan Premier League match on Sunday evening, using home advantage and a late breakthrough to claim all three points. The result gives İmişli a valuable win in the league table and leaves Shamakhi frustrated after an encouraging away performance that ultimately fell short.

Match overview

The game was played at a brisk tempo from the opening whistle, with İmişli looking to press high and force mistakes in Shamakhi’s defensive third. The home side’s early intensity paid off when they opened the scoring, but Shamakhi responded well and grew into the contest as the first half wore on. The visitors found an equaliser before the break and briefly looked the more composed side in possession.

After the interval, the match became more fragmented, with both teams committing fouls in midfield and struggling to create clear-cut chances. İmişli, however, pushed more aggressively in the final 20 minutes, and their persistence was rewarded with the winning goal. Shamakhi had late half-chances to steal a point, but İmişli’s defence held firm under pressure.

Key moments

• Opening goal: İmişli struck first after a quick attacking transition, catching Shamakhi’s back line out of shape.
• Shamakhi equaliser: The visitors responded before half-time, finishing off a patient move that stretched the home defence.
• Late winner: İmişli regained the lead in the second half with a well-worked attack that proved decisive.
• Late resistance: Shamakhi pushed numbers forward in stoppage time, but İmişli defended their box with composure.

Tactical story

İmişli’s approach was built on energy and vertical passing. Their midfield pressed aggressively, trying to win the ball high and release runners behind Shamakhi’s defence. That strategy created the opening goal and kept the visitors under pressure for long spells. Defensively, İmişli were occasionally exposed when Shamakhi switched play quickly, but they improved their spacing after the equaliser.

Shamakhi, by contrast, looked most dangerous when they slowed the game down and built through midfield. Their equaliser came from exactly that kind of controlled possession, and they had moments in the second half where they looked capable of taking the lead. The decisive difference was İmişli’s ability to turn territory into a late goal, while Shamakhi could not convert their best spells into clear chances.

Standout performers

İmişli’s captain was central to the win, setting the tone in midfield and driving the team forward in the second half. The home goalkeeper also made two important saves, including a strong stop late in the game that preserved the lead. Up front, İmişli’s movement caused Shamakhi problems throughout, especially in the final 30 minutes.

For Shamakhi, the midfield creator was their most consistent outlet, linking play and helping the visitors recover from the early setback. Their equaliser was the reward for a composed response, but the away side will rue a handful of rushed decisions in the final third.

League impact

The three points are significant for İmişli, who will see the result as a platform to build momentum in the Azerbaijan Premier League. A home win of this kind can be crucial in a competitive league where fine margins often decide the table. Shamakhi, meanwhile, leave with no points but with enough positive moments to suggest they can remain competitive in their upcoming fixtures.

The final scoreline of İmişli FK 2-1 Shamakhi FK reflects a match that was balanced for long periods but decided by İmişli’s late push and Shamakhi’s inability to take their chances when the game was there to be won.
