Shahdagh Qusar claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sabail FC in the Azerbaijan First Division on 21 October 2026, with a second-half goal separating the sides in a tense, tactical encounter at the Qusar City Stadium. The win gives Shahdagh Qusar a valuable three points on home soil and extends their encouraging run in the league, while Sabail FC were left to rue a lack of cutting edge in the final third.

Match Overview

The evening kick-off began with Sabail FC looking the more assertive side in possession, moving the ball quickly through midfield and forcing Shahdagh Qusar into a compact defensive shape. The visitors enjoyed the better of the early territorial battle, but clear chances were rare as the home back line held firm. Shahdagh Qusar grew into the contest as the first half wore on, using the pace of their wide players to stretch Sabail on the counter-attack.

After a cagey opening 45 minutes, the match opened up after the interval. Shahdagh Qusar began pressing higher and won several second balls in midfield, turning defence into attack with greater urgency. The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute when Elvin Mammadov latched onto a clever through ball from Tural Hasanov and slotted a low finish past the advancing goalkeeper. Sabail pushed for an equaliser thereafter, but Shahdagh Qusar managed the closing stages with maturity and discipline.

• 28th minute: Shahdagh Qusar threatened on the break, with Elvin Mammadov forcing a smart save from the Sabail goalkeeper after cutting in from the left.
• 63rd minute: The breakthrough. Tural Hasanov’s incisive pass released Mammadov, who kept his composure to score the only goal of the game.
• 78th minute: Sabail FC’s best chance of the second half arrived from a set piece, but Shahdagh goalkeeper Kamran Ibrahimov produced a strong one-handed save.
• 90+3 minutes: A last-ditch clearance from defender Orkhan Guliyev denied Sabail a late equaliser as Shahdagh Qusar saw out the win.

Tactical Story

Shahdagh Qusar set up in a disciplined 4-2-3-1 formation, prioritising defensive solidity and quick transitions. The midfield double pivot screened the back four effectively, forcing Sabail FC to play in front of them rather than through them. When Shahdagh won possession, they looked to release Mammadov and the wide attackers into space behind Sabail’s full-backs.

Sabail FC, by contrast, used a 4-3-3 system designed to dominate the ball and pin Shahdagh back. They circulated possession well in the first half but struggled to find penetrating passes into the penalty area. As the game progressed, Sabail’s full-backs pushed higher, leaving gaps that Shahdagh Qusar exploited for the winning goal. The visitors’ late surge created a few nervous moments, but Shahdagh’s compact block and intelligent game management proved enough.

Standout Players

Elvin Mammadov was the obvious match-winner, combining sharp movement with a calm finish for the decisive goal. His willingness to run in behind kept Sabail’s centre-backs occupied throughout. Goalkeeper Kamran Ibrahimov also deserves credit for a composed display, highlighted by his crucial second-half save. At the back, Orkhan Guliyev led by example with timely interceptions and a goal-line clearance in stoppage time.

For Sabail FC, the midfield trio worked hard to control the tempo, and their goalkeeper made several important stops to keep the scoreline respectable. However, the team lacked a finishing touch in the final third, and that proved costly on the night.

Season Impact

The result strengthens Shahdagh Qusar’s position in the Azerbaijan First Division standings, lifting them into the upper half of the table and building momentum ahead of their next fixture. For Sabail FC, the defeat leaves them searching for consistency and highlights the need to convert possession into goals. With the league campaign beginning to take shape, both sides will know that fine margins like these often decide promotion and playoff ambitions.
