Qarabag Khankendi edged past Shahdagh Qusar 1-0 in Azerbaijan First Division action on Thursday, 15 October 2026. A single goal was enough to settle a tight contest that was decided by a moment of quality and a stubborn defensive performance.

The home side controlled long spells of possession but had to work hard for the breakthrough. Shahdagh Qusar defended in numbers and threatened on the break, making it a nervous finish for Qarabag Khankendi. In the end, the clean sheet was just as important as the goal.

Match overview

Qarabag Khankendi started on the front foot, moving the ball quickly and trying to stretch Shahdagh Qusar’s back line. The visitors responded by sitting deep, conceding territory but limiting clear chances. The first half was largely a battle of patience, with Qarabag probing for gaps and Shahdagh looking to counter through their forwards.

The decisive goal arrived after a sustained period of pressure, when Qarabag Khankendi found space between the lines and finished clinically. Shahdagh Qusar pushed more players forward in the final 20 minutes, but the home defence remained composed, clearing crosses and blocking shots to protect the narrow lead.

Key moments

• Qarabag pressure: The hosts dominated the ball early, forcing a series of corners and free-kicks around the penalty area.
• Decisive goal: A well-timed run and composed finish gave Qarabag Khankendi the lead.
• Shahdagh response: The visitors changed shape and began to press higher, creating one or two half-chances.
• Late defending: Qarabag’s centre-backs and goalkeeper dealt with a flurry of late crosses to preserve the clean sheet.

Tactical story

Qarabag Khankendi used a possession-based approach, with their midfielders circulating the ball and looking for overloads on the flanks. Their No. 10 found pockets of space throughout, and the winning goal came from exactly that kind of movement. Defensively, they pressed selectively, avoiding being caught out by Shahdagh’s direct counterattacks.

Shahdagh Qusar set up to frustrate and nearly succeeded. Their low block forced Qarabag into wide areas, and they looked dangerous when breaking forward. However, the final pass was often missing, and their best moments came from set pieces rather than open play.

Standout players

The Qarabag Khankendi goalscorer deserves credit for a calm finish in a crowded box. The defensive midfielder also had a strong game, breaking up play and recycling possession efficiently. At the back, the captain led a disciplined unit that limited Shahdagh to very few clear looks at goal.

For Shahdagh Qusar, the goalkeeper made several saves to keep the score at 1-0, and the centre-back pairing stood firm under pressure. Their best outfield player was the right winger, who carried the ball well on the counter.

Season impact

This narrow victory gives Qarabag Khankendi three important points in the Azerbaijan First Division and reinforces their reputation as a team capable of winning tight matches. The clean sheet will please the coaching staff, especially after a game where the margin was so small. Shahdagh Qusar will take encouragement from their defensive organisation but must find more attacking output if they are to climb the table.
