Sabail FC and Zira FK played out a 1-1 draw in the Azerbaijan Cup on 27 October 2026, a tense knockout encounter that left both sides with reasons for encouragement but neither with a decisive advantage. Under the lights in Baku, the hosts struck first through Elvin Rzayev before Zira FK responded after the break with a well-worked equaliser from Ramin Abdullayev.

Match overview

Sabail FC began with the greater urgency, pressing high and looking to turn early possession into chances. The home side’s width caused problems in the opening half-hour, with their full-backs pushing forward and the midfield deliberately switching play. Zira FK, by contrast, were content to sit compact and attack in transition, and that patience nearly paid off before the interval.

The breakthrough arrived in the 34th minute when Sabail’s pressure finally told. A quick exchange on the edge of the box released Elvin Rzayev, who took a touch to steady himself before finishing low beyond the goalkeeper. It was a goal that reflected Sabail’s best spell of the match, but it did not discourage Zira from sticking to their game plan.

Key moments

• 18th minute: Sabail’s first clear opening came from a cross into the box, but the header drifted wide.
• 34th minute: Elvin Rzayev opened the scoring for Sabail FC with a composed finish inside the area.
• 45+2 minutes: Zira FK forced a save at the near post as they finished the half strongly.
• 67th minute: Ramin Abdullayev equalised for Zira FK with a curling effort after a swift counter-attack.
• 84th minute: Sabail goalkeeper Nijat Huseynov made an important stop to keep the score level.
• 90+3 minutes: A last-ditch block denied Zira a late winner as the cup tie ended 1-1.

Tactical story

Sabail FC controlled much of the ball, but their dominance was not always matched by penetration. Zira FK defended in a disciplined mid-block, forcing Sabail into wide areas and then crowding the penalty box. The home side’s best moments came when their midfielders played vertically rather than circulating possession, and the opening goal was a perfect example of that direct approach.

After the break, Zira FK grew into the game. Their equaliser was typical of a team that had defended patiently and then attacked with purpose. A turnover in midfield allowed them to break quickly, and Ramin Abdullayev found space on the edge of the area before curling a shot past the goalkeeper. From that point on, the contest became more open, with both teams trading chances in a frantic final 20 minutes.

Standout performers

Elvin Rzayev was Sabail’s most dangerous attacker, linking play and giving the Zira defence a constant problem with his movement. Ramin Abdullayev was the key figure for Zira FK, not only for his equaliser but also for his ability to carry the ball forward under pressure. Sabail goalkeeper Nijat Huseynov also deserves credit for a late save that prevented Zira from completing the turnaround.

Cup impact and what comes next

The 1-1 scoreline keeps the Azerbaijan Cup tie finely balanced. Sabail FC will feel they should have made more of their first-half control, while Zira FK will take confidence from their response and their improved second-half display. Both managers now have a clear picture of where the tie can be won: Sabail need to be more ruthless in the final third, and Zira must find a way to impose themselves earlier.

For supporters, the draw delivered the kind of cup night that keeps a competition alive — two goals, several turning points, and a result that leaves the next chapter wide open. The Sabail FC vs Zira FK cup clash may not have produced a winner, but it produced enough intensity to make the return of domestic action and the next stage of the cup campaign feel significant for both clubs.
