İmişli FK produced a dominant 4-1 victory over Qaradag Lokbatan in the Azerbaijan Cup, turning a competitive first half into a comfortable win with a clinical second-half display at İmişli City Stadium.

The home side scored twice in each half, showing superior quality in the final third and punishing Qaradag Lokbatan’s defensive lapses. The result sends İmişli into the next round with confidence and gives their supporters a memorable cup night.

Match overview

İmişli started brightly and took the game to their opponents. Their midfield pressed with purpose, and the front line moved the ball quickly in and around the penalty area. Qaradag Lokbatan initially defended in a deep block and looked to counter, but they struggled to keep possession under pressure.

The opening goal came after a sustained spell of İmişli pressure. A well-worked move down the right created space for a cross, and the ball was converted from close range. Qaradag responded with a period of pressure and equalised with a well-taken effort, briefly silencing the home crowd.

Key moments

İmişli regained the lead before half-time through a set piece. A corner from the left was met with a powerful header, and the goalkeeper could only watch as the ball found the net. That goal restored control and changed the mood heading into the interval.

After the break, İmişli accelerated. Their third goal came from a quick transition, with a driving run through midfield ending in a low finish. Qaradag’s defenders appealed for offside, but the goal stood, and the home side’s confidence surged.

The fourth arrived late on as İmişli continued to press. A defensive mistake allowed their forward to steal in and finish calmly, capping a strong individual performance and a comprehensive team display.

Tactical story

İmişli’s shape gave them control in midfield and allowed their wide players to attack with freedom. Their pressing was well organised, with the forwards curving their runs to cut off passing lanes to the full-backs. That pressure forced Qaradag Lokbatan into long balls, which İmişli’s centre-backs dealt with comfortably for much of the night.

In possession, İmişli were direct but not reckless. They used quick combinations to break through the first line of defence and were willing to shoot from range when the opportunity arose. Qaradag’s defensive line was often stretched, and their midfield struggled to track runners arriving from deep.

Standout performers

İmişli’s forward was the focal point of their attack, linking play, holding the ball up and getting into dangerous positions. The midfield also impressed, particularly in the second half when İmişli took control of the tempo. The set-piece delivery was another key factor, with İmişli’s dead-ball quality causing problems throughout.

For Qaradag Lokbatan, the goalkeeper made several saves and could not be blamed for all four goals. Their best player was arguably the midfielder who scored the equaliser, showing composure in a difficult match. Defensively, however, the side will need to improve if they are to progress in future cup competitions.

What the win means

The victory is a significant morale boost for İmişli FK and underlines their ambition in the Azerbaijan Cup. Cup competitions reward teams that take their chances, and İmişli did exactly that, scoring at key moments and never allowing their opponents to settle after the second goal.

Qaradag Lokbatan will be disappointed with the scoreline, especially after equalising in the first half. The match turned on İmişli’s set-piece goal before the interval and the quick third goal after the break. Those moments highlighted the fine margins in knockout football.

İmişli can now look forward to the next round with momentum, while Qaradag Lokbatan will return to league matters and look to learn from a difficult away night. The 4-1 result was a fair reflection of İmişli’s superiority in front of goal and their ability to sustain pressure across both halves.
